Connecting an unpatched linux machine to an unfirewalled internet connection would hardly be a good idea.

Ubuntu, on my network at least, doesn't leave any open ports running, so until you start turning on services you don't need a firewall.

Well... It depends on whether those services are listening to external connections or not. It might be handy for the OP to get a router with a builtin firewall, btw...
