A watch thread for N. American Christian nationalism, Christo-fascists and the evangelical far right

story

Changing the facts
Given the way things are developing over there I think we need a dedicated thread for this.

I considered exhuming a thread from 2007 it doesn’t really serve the purpose (although it’s interesting to see Phil Dwyer insisting that the US is solidly and safely Democratic)

There are several fire and brimstone preachers who hold regular tent meetings, are highly active on social media, have tens of thousands of followers, and are deliberately fomenting hate and division. They are predictably antiabortion homophobic etc and so forth, but further they say that voting Democrat is bad, even evil, some are calling for the Church and the State to be united.

They‘re not all fire and brimstone but they’re all doing the same stuff.

Greg Locke
Kenneth Copeland
William “Dutch” Sheets
Bill Bolin

There are many others. Some of them are obscenely rich and running obvious grifts, but that’s not the worst of it. There are book burnings, accusations of witchcraft, insidious criticisms of groups and individuals that have (probably) been the direct cause of attacks.

There is a weird claim that Trump is the Son of Man, or the Messiah. A book is being handed out free at Trump rallies. How many people believe or dismiss this is unclear

There is a new version of the Bible that includes quotes and even changes that support their views.

Plenty of people are saying it’s a storm in a teacup, they don’t have much reach, it’s a crazy fringe, it won’t amount to anything. I think that pointing and laughing is dangerous complacency.

Trump is playing footsie with this crowd. The GOP are still hedging their bets with him. America is horribly polarised. Roe V Wade has been overturned. Kanye West has triggered an increase in antisemitism with his stupidity. Systemic racism continues unabated. Climate change is going to do enormous damage to their economy and stability. Q-Anon, the Patriot movement, the Oath-keepers, the Watchmen…. And behind it all is their weird gun culture.

The right and the far right see the growing crowds and the growing strength in the evangelical movement and they’re getting to be the same crowd. It’s becoming more difficult to be an atheist in the US, or to not have religion as an obvious part of your identity.
It’s happening elsewhere in the world too, but America always does things big bigger biggest so they get their own thread.

I‘ll post some links below. Here are a couple to be getting on with.

I can’t find the thing I read about it being increasingly tricky to be an atheist in the US. And I know there is pushback on this a well, people in certain places being openly “non-religious”. The point here isn’t about whether or not atheism is okay in America, it’s about how atheism is seen, received and reacted to. People don’t like to vote for atheists, and I’ve had recent conversations with Americans who tell me it’s becoming more normal for atheists to feel the need to obscure their atheism at work, turn up to church from time to time etc.

This article is about how voters tend not to vote for atheists.

Tbh the elephant in this particular thread is the way districts have been and continue to be gerrymandered so this sort of nonsense gets more chance of electoral success, building on decades of experience by the republican party - so whether these views hold sway is less relevant than the chance of their adherents gaining office and rolling things further

Here is Troy Black, a “prophet” who talks about Trump being elected. I haven’t watched the whole thing.

This is an example of stochastic terrorism on the rise. We can expect to see more of this kind of shit.

There has been discussion on other threads about whether or not American might be lurching toward civil war of some kind. I’d argue that stochastic terrorism is part of a kind of guerrilla war going on inside of America.

If it was contained in the USA, it might be easier to gawp at in horror before moving on, but this is very well funded and it reaches everywhere, including places not well placed to withstand it - Nigeria, Ethiopia, Haiti, Brazil. The angle with Israel is well covered, despite the bulk of Christian nationalism/evangelism being fundamentally anti Semitic when it comes to actual Jews. Some really frightening cross pollination with Russian structures, which is much less covered, although some more traction on that has developed recently, for obvious reasons.

Btw - I don't know if anyone watched the excellent 'TraumaZone' on iplayer? It's the story of the Soviet Union/Russia from 1985-1999, told through archive footage without voiceover. One of the creepiest things (and the competition was stiff!) were the scenes of American evangelicals inserting themselves into the vacuum. They pop up in the middle of hell, and feast on whatever they find. They do it everywhere, including in the UK*, but there was something monumentally disturbing about the footage of them scavenging through 90's Russia and Ukraine.

*A few summers ago, there was a southern baptist preacher in the park one evening. It seemed very organized - his film crew was present. I sat down for a bit, thinking at least it might be amusing in a horrific way. It wasn't. It was really boring, he didn't make sense. Perhaps for someone who had some working knowledge of bible stuff, they'd have found more hooks into whatever he was trying to say. I didn't grow up in that kind of environment, no Sunday school, not baptized, (however, not atheist - it just wasn't discussed at all, although we had friends who were religious, including an actual nun), so it made no sense to me, and touched on nothing I'd ever really heard.

Looking pretty terrifying in the US at the moment. The most barbaric and backward parts of the population look set to rise up over the next few days to elect the Neo-Hitlerite Christian-fundamentalist Trumpist Republican party - who could seize control over congress and the senate. Voter suppression and gerrymandering - rubberstamped by the fascist, Christian fundamentalist dominated US Supreme Court - favour the Neo-Hitlerite barbarian candidates.

If the democrats are outvoted at the midterms Biden is effectively out of power.

If there is one timeworn cliché about elections, it is that the next one is the most significant in our lifetime. There is reason to believe it is true this time. Although the outcomes remain uncertain, one thing is clear: If Republicans win control of the House of Representatives, the country will face a series of fundamental challenges much greater than we have had in any modern period of divided government, including a direct and palpable threat of default and government shutdown. The Republican majority will be more radical, reckless, and willing to employ nuclear options to achieve its goals than any of its predecessors have been, and its leadership, starting with McCarthy, will be either compliant or too weak to head off catastrophe.

We have moved into a new and frightening era in American politics and governance, one when radicals intent on a revolution and craving major disruption will be not just a vocal minority but potentially dominating a governing body. We cannot risk the full consequences of that brutal reality.

If Republicans win the House on Nov. 8, the GOP caucus will elect a new speaker and take power on Jan. 3, 2023. They will run every committee and decide what bills come to the House floor……
A return to Republican power in the House would be a victory for Trump, who has fought Democrat-led efforts to hold him accountable for the Jan. 6, 2021, Capitol insurrection. The vast majority of Republicans who are expected to return to Washington next year, along with most of those hoping to win a first term, are loyal to Trump and have followed his example in their policies and positions.
The November midterm elections will determine which parties take control over the House and the Senate, ultimately defining the fate of President Joe Biden's legislative agenda.

No point me providing a single link, this is a big story with multiple front lines of discussion.
Do a search for vote democrat unchristian and see the returns. Here are the screenshots for my results for that search.

DeSantis got in last time on the back of Hispanic voters, who were subject to a huge scheme of disinformation - mainly on talk radio in Spanish but also through organised WhatsApp groups sharing memes etc (same method as was used to get Bolsonaro in, probably done by the same people). I guess they’ve done something similar this time. Democrats were caught a bit flat footed as they didn’t have anything set up to counter disinformation in Spanish.

Tad DeLay wrote a book a while back called Against: what the white evangelicals want. It’s an excellent book and covers a lot of areas.

He also made it into a podcast which is worth a listen
