A vote for football?

Can there be any argument that Man Utd are the best football team in the country? That they play the best football?

Would even the most ardent diehard Man Utd haters argue that them winning the league (and the CL possibly) would be good for football ...or at least a lot better for football than if Chelsea won it?

I'd disagree. I'd say the anyone apart from Man Utd, Liverpool, Chelsea & Arsenal winning the league would be good for football.

OK, fair point.

But out of Man Utd and Chelsea ...?

Hear hear. A salary and spending cap should be introduced immediately.

we need Brian Clough to come back from the dead and take a team like Coventry QPR etc to be back to back European Champions.

...and why not? It'd be more exciting that the top two swapping places and cups every year, and the other two carpetbagging the CL places every season, yet never putting up a decent championship fight.

One of his former pupils, Roy Keane, might give it a shot with Sunderland over the next couple of years.

So sweet. ManUre fans have such a desperate need to be liked by the rest of us. It's like owning a puppy.

Out of the top four, I'd much prefer Liverpool to win the Premiership simply for some variety. Arsenal, reluctantly, rather than the other two, but I can't choose between ManUre and Chelski in terms of who I despise more. For any of those three to keep winning the Premiership is just boring. What we desperately need more than anything else is for one or more teams to break the stranglehold that those teams have on the Champions League places. Apart from Everton last season, am I right to think that the last team outside those four to play in the Champions League was Newcastle and that was now getting on for ten years ago?

As to playing the best football, I would agree that when ManUre are good they can be scintillatingly good (see Roma on Tuesday). Chelski are probably overall less exciting. Arsenal play very pretty football but it has been ineffectual, by their standards, this year. Liverpool haven't quite got the mix yet for a serious title challenge, although they're getting there.

That reminds me of one of the classic bloopers on "It'll Be Alright On The Night". An American redneck was being interviewed about the grave of some historical figure and was asked "why was X buried here?" The response: "because he died!"

Yes, they came to Anfield a few weeks ago and there wasn't a squeak from them. This thing about utd winning the league is a joke - the only reason chelsea aren't is because they were without both their first choice centre halfs for a part of the season.

No, it would make no difference to football, why do you think it would?. Utd reglarly go out and spend 30 mil on players, same as chelsea.

Why would you just assume I'm a Man Utd supporter? I'm not.

Because a team playing open attacking football would set a better example than one that is pragmatic and wins a ,ot of its games 1-0.

Do you think Chelsea are a better team than Man Utd?

And they "regularly" spend 30 million?! How are you defining "regularly"?

If that is your criteria then Arsenal are miles better then Man utd?

Yes I do, by regularly I mean in the past few seasons they have splashed the cash in order to get players, not on the same scale as chelsea, but they've bought success just the same.

By what rationale do you think that Chelsea are a better team than Man Utd?

I agree about the Arsenal comment btw ...although "miles better" might be stretching things a bit.

Utd play the best football in the league, arguably in the world...giggs, rooney and ronaldo on there day are up there as the most exciting players in the world...even the most blinkered Utd hater must see this but am sure it will be shot down.....I couldn't give a f*ck...know who'd I'd rather watch:)

Despite playing without their first choice centre halfs for a significant part of the season they are three points behind utd, that is why.

I think Arsenal winning the double in the way they did when Wenger first took over was great for football.

Chelsea fan, however, United have been amazing this season. On their form, they deserve to win the league....Although I hang on to hope.

They keep reinventing themselves as a great team. This one could be their best yet (possibly because of one man). Never seen a team counter attack as quickly as them.

Not sure if it would be better for football if they won it necessarily. Football's all fucked up already.

To be honest I'd rather watch Wycombe play than watch Man Utd play and if we're talking about whats good for football then Man Utd fans can fuck off because they didn't give a fuck about what was good for football when they played a part in creating the premier league and fucking over the smaller clubs ! I'm just gutted glazer hasn't fucked them over yet tbh !

Isn't it always better for football if attacking flair is seen to win more often than cynical pragmatism?

Isn't football about more than just winning at any cost?

Given a choice I'd rather see Chelsea win their third title - ManUre have won loads of titles in the last 15 years - Chelsea have only ever won the League three times in total - also out of those left I'd also rather see Chelsea win the European Cup - the other two have both won it before (Liverpool too many times to count). Let's spread the titles around and as these are the only ones who can wil them now I'll settle for that preference.

BTW I am not & never have been a Chelsea fan.

I much prefer this Man U team to the one of 99 or so. In my view they are more exciting to watch, that 99 treble team got lucky quite a lot. And I despised Keane. OK I don't like Ronaldo either, but he's just a gimp. Keane was an utter twat. So them winning it would be preferable to Super-Wimbledon.

On occasions this season United have played the best football by an English team. Winning 4-0 away at Bolton and Spurs and thrashing Roma 7-1 were great results. Even playing poorly but becoming the first team to win a league game at Anfield in a year deserves credit.

But don't forget this is the team who have had the league double done over them by Arsenal. They have also lost to West Ham and Portsmouth in the league and Celtic and Southend in cups. Nothing to be proud of there.

They deserve to win the league imo. The draws they have had in the FA Cup have been kind to say the least. Away to Boro being their only potentially challenging tie. As mentioned above, Chelsea have done brilliantly to stay in all competitions despite key injuries.

In summary, Utd for the league, Chelsea for the FA Cup and Liverpool for the European Cup would be fair enough. United with nothing would be hilarious.

Does that mean the spirit of what he achieved should die too?
most of his type of spirit can be found in the local pub....(sorry, cheap gag) but yes, it should continue to thrive and relight the football league. power to the minnows, and long live the under-dog. hard work and guts of steal, its time for the grafters to have their day. its not about winning, but the glory of the game....

or

it could now only be about the moneymen

f*cked if I'd see the funny side though can see it happening...my prediction for utd anything else is a bonus

i'm well on edge with man united this season, mainly cos before the start of this season I really didn't think we were in with a shot of much. My main concern is the league and i'm trying to look at everything after that as a bonus (or so i keep trying to tell myself!).
