In its timing, and in its ‘class war’ selectivity, polio was the emblematic disease of the middle 20th century.

I've not come up with a better idea than pheasant 'flu. Maybe you could engineer a bacterium that tended to rush to the front of planes - but then you'd have to accept that you were zapping {the rich + pilots}.
