When wearing a vintage long line girdle this will not be possible and one should either go commando or wear knickers with a buttoned gusset.

Absolutely not a definitive answer.. but I think it looks better when girls wear their knickers inside their stockings.

Outside is more practical if you want to take your knickers off.. but then if you're going to go to all the effort of dressing up in the first place - might as well keep them on and just slip them to one side...
