A thread about Camera Filters!

Ok then.

In terms of Neutral Density filters, what kind of range of densities would I be best getting, bearing in mind that I am looking to use them for stopping down on water/smoke shots, and that the sunlight over here is really fucking harsh.

Are there any particular brands to chose/avoid? What about gels? I really want some bayonet fitting neutral density filters for a rollei, but these don't seem to exist so I was thinking about sacrificing a bayonet fit mount and adding gels to get the effect I want. Can you get neutral density gels? If so, where/brands/density etc.

You can get a rollei-bayonet mount that will fit the Cokin system or could be bodged on to a gel holder for other filters. Either from Cokin themselves or from the likes of SRB in Luton.

SRB also sell a snap-on gel holder that is superb for a variety of things. It simply spring-clips on to the lens & has its own barndoors for shading etc. When closed, they also make a good protector for some of the stupidly expensive special purpose filters/gels that I use at work.

Just checked my camera bag & my ND grads are 0.3, 1.2 & 2. Plus a grad gray that can sometimes be useful where the sky is a bit over-contrasty. The 1.2 grad is probably most used.

There are also a set of ND gels & holder that cover a range from 0.5-4.0, circ & linear polarisers (yes, I often prefer to manual focus) & the mono filters I rarely use now. Red & yellow-green were my favourite there.

Hmm. Seems you can only get the adapters for Rollei Bay IV-VI. I need I and III. Oh well.

Any advice on where to get gels from, then?

Firky did you end up getting your Singh Ray filters? - How are they?

No! I figured I don't do enough landscape photography to justify importing a Graduated Singh Ray ND filter. Next time my brother is in NYC I will aks him to pick me some up however :)

I've got a I & III before. If they are not listing them in the catalogue, SRB will still make them for you & are not that expensive if you don't want a quick delivery.

Gels from various sources. Lee & Kodak Wratten are probably the best & easiest but not cheap. There are a variety of no-name but reasonably hardwearing mylar gels out there. Buy a single one/pack to test its quality/absence of colour casts first.

Will anyone on here own-up to trying one? :D

yup...would do one to show you...but they aren't to had so I wunt...may do tho. :p
