A suggestion to change the name of this forum to Britain and Ireland

It does seem unsuitable to refer to the British Isles as an archipeligo. It sounds too foreign. We need to think of a suitably Saxonic and cold name. A Coronet of Islands, or The Imperium or some such.

Why don't we have the British Isles as all the islands, Britain as mainland Great Britain and Great Britain as Britain plus immediate/proximate islands - Skye/Wight, etc. That would be sensible.
What? Does that even make sense? :D

The archipelago (including Skye/Wight/Isle of Dogs ;) and all the rest) is the British Isles. Great Britain is the big bit.

That's the geography.

England is the bottom of the big bit, but not the lump on the left. Plus the little bits close by. Scotland is the smaller section at the top of the big bit, plus all the little bits close by. Wales is the lump on the left, plus any little bits off its shore.

That's the historical countries.

In the diagram, which of the "minor islands" are show as being in the UK?
It doesn't detail them, but shows that there is a set called The British Isles, a sub set of which is the UK, a subset of which is Great Britain, which itself divides into England etc.

This is where I said the diagram fell down, because one might infer the island of Great Britain is all there is to the constituent countries.

The diagram should also box off Wales and England within their own bubble. The bubble for England and Wales is correct as they share a legal system etc (unlike Scotland), but there is now a body of Welsh-only law, so Wales and England should be rendered appropriately.

I would find British Isles acceptable but it seems a bit wierd when the UK and Ireland is simple and correct.
I find UK and Ireland acceptable .. politically yes it is correct ..

but i don't like it .. i don't associate nor like the idea of a UK .. wheras i like and am happy with living in a geographical British Isles and Ireland

UK politics is fine, I dont think you need to split them between England, Wales and Scotland

a sub forum for Ireland maybe?

:D

At the risk of sounding flippant, what is correct and logical is more important than what you 'like' or are 'happy living in geographically' (and i'm hardly pro-UK!).

You continue to [deliberately] miss the fact that Ireland is: a)not in Britain and b) not British. Either there is a massive gap in your historical knowledge or you're being a tit. which is it?

He hasn't missed the fact at all. Either you are unable to read properly or you are being a tit. Which is it?

You wouldn't really want to see or discuss the minutiae of Irish politics, outside of life or death politics in NI its really just very woeful down south:o.
