A slattern asks...

You know you need to clean up your clothes from the bedroom floor when the cat can't find a good clear bit of carpet to throw up on at half 4 in the morning :D

But why would they wish to throw up on a good clear bit of carpet when they can do it on tomorrow's work clothes ? Which they've been sleeping on anyway ?

I'm untidy but not dirty. I don't really like dishes being left hanging around for ages, but am not compelled to do them instantly. I leave a lot of my crap lying around the place - papers, letters, items, never dishes - but I've had to curtail this habit since living with Kyser as he likes to have things quite orderly. Suffice to say I am still not as orderly as he would like, but I have gotten a lot neater. That said, it's usually me that does the periodic annoying cleaning stuff, like cleaning the fridge, the fronts of the cupboards, mopping/sweeping the floor etc. We share the bathroom equally though and he does all the washing, I do all the cooking, cause he can't cook for toffee. We're not neat freaks by any stretch though, last weekend I made Kyser dust for the first time in probably six months - it was.... well, dusty....

At the moment we're making a huge effort, and are washing up nearly every day!

Nearly every day? That's not much of an effort! I don't understand how people can have dirty dishes lying around for over 24 hours, it's not hygienic for one thing, especially in the summer.

I will (reluctantly) agree to let butchers leave the washing up overnight to be done in the morning, on occasion, but I'm not really happy about it and it has to be piled up in the bowl and out of my sight.

I wouldn't say my house is spotlessly clean and I'm not a slave to housework, but the all the things that need to be clean are kept spotless. My toilet bowl is always pristine. :D

Our problem? We've got too much stuff. Dillinger4 will tell you - you can barely walk from one end of our house to the other for the amount of 'stuff' we have. I find it difficult to motivate myself to clean when it looks so fucking untidy afterwards anyway. Might as well go the whole hog.

This is the crux of it for me - living in a cramped one bedroom London flat, I've barely got room to move the hoover move than a couple of feet in any direction at a time without running into something that needs to be moved out of the way.

I'd love to live somewhere clean but it is always going to look untidy unless I go for a Japanese capsule hotel minimalist look.

I do the majority of the cooking and buying of household stuff. I leave the cleaning to my flatmates.

That's part of it for me as well certainly. I _am_ also messy scum though. I can take one bag to a hotel room and by the morning the place will be a tip somehow.

I'm lucky. My childminder also does 'light cleaning' ( I never asked her to though, honest!;) ). This means she keeps the living room kitchen and playroom tidy, does the washing and hoovers downstairs. It all goes to hell at the weekend when she's not around, and we have to frantically tidy up in Sunday evening again. Every few weeks we'll blitz the place properly, or thats the intention anyway. I absolutely love it when the place is totally clean and tidy - if I was loaded I'd have a cleaner in to do it every day.:)

I love the word slattern, and am almost proud to join the clan :)

However, I really love the notion of having a tidy, clean house. It's just that I have never achieved it. :(

Even if I had a cleaner (which I nearly did recently, but turns out she only wanted to do my ironing, and I don't want to pay someone just to do my ironing), it would be impossible for him/her to make my house clean and tidy, because it is full of crap which hasn't got a home. I need shelves for books, and a skip for rubbish!
