A signing on rant

The jobcentre is the worst recruitment agency of all. They are absolutely useless in my experience when it comes to actually helping people back to work. Absolutely and utterly useless.
That's no bad thing! If they were any good they'd actually be getting people off benefits and into jobs.

If you actually want work, go to a proper agency :D

Er...Excuse me!! We can only do as much as we can...and if you saw the amount of people that are signing on that DONT want work, then maybe you would say something a bit better than that!!

I managed to get 189 people into work last year and I was only part-time then.

Maybe people should take a little bit of time to actually look for work themselves...after all, there are lots of different ways to find work, and the internet is a HUGE source of jobs. We can only offer the jobs we get given by employers, the highly paid ones tend to go through agencies and internet.Maybe people should try a little harder to obtain work themselves, and not expect the JCP find them work. A lot of people I see only actually bother looking for their work on our Jobpoints for the ten minutes once a fortnight that they attend the Jobcentre. Thats not exactly trying very hard, is it?

Obviously there are people that are searching for work really hard, but that is by far from the norm.

Gosh, surely it would be easier to get a job than to go through all that hassle.

What sort of work are you looking for? Is it really that hard to find?

Please tell me you don't seriously think that us people signing on wait to get money before we start looking for a job?

I certainly wouldn't bother using the job centre touch screen jobbies, I just know that the kind of work I'm looking for will be found through an agency or the net.

I do agree that the whole signing on thing and "show us what you have been doing to seek work" is a bit of a charade.

The other point worth mentioning is certainly at Croydon job centre the staff have to deal with some of the lowest of the low - mainly aggressive people arguing about this and that, the last time we went they had at least six security guards working there - it's no suprise that they are thinking of closing them and do everything via the net or phone.

btw I hope this does not affect your job!

Bikergrrl, No, not all people wait for money before they start looking for work...not all...but a lot, and I honestly mean, a lot!!

I can tell in 5 mins if a person is seriously looking for work or not, and if theyre not, then I'm pretty lenient, I'm not one of the employees that will stop the persons money, after all...what are they going to live on? I'm not going to play God with someones life, its up to them what they make of it.

However, we do, as was previously said, deal with some pretty unsavoury characters. My friend was going home and was actually chased onto a railway bridge and viciously assualted, her handbag was thrown over the bridge onto the railway line, and she was in a TERRIBLE way. The guy had been signing on, and wanted more money for drugs...we have had no end of fights between customers, we have seen 3 of our signers hang themselves THIS YEAR, and these are young people that we have got to know and we have a fondness for...and it effects us. I couldve cried at my desk last week when a 21yr old girl hung herself....a week after her friend, also a signer did the same... yeah...life is shit in the Jobcentre...but I try to be friendly, and I have people talk to me about everything, their lives...how things effect them. Sometimes they just need me to listen...and I do.

Don't get me started on council tax and sodding Housing Benefit. Housing benefit is worth a whole other thread alone right now.

Or the bloody Inland Revenue. I could write a novel about my dealings with the bloody Inland Revenue. No sorry, Kafka beat me to it

set up in the job centre with a "please give me some food as until this lot pay me i cant afford to buy my own" sign.

I can guarentee you will get some attention

YOu'll probably get escorted out by the security guard (by security guard i mean an old, fat bloke who couldn't deal with anything if it all kicked off).

Hee hee...you're right about the security staff...theyre better now, but a couple of years ago it was a right old shambles!! The stories I could tell you...LOL!!

If you've got the little book already, you should be able to get a crisis loan to feed yourself. It's a pittance (about £5 a day) but it can get you some value beans or something :) They won't ever backdate it though (you can't have an emergency in the past) so get in there early

For anyone that doesnt know though, there is now an 'Interim Payment'. This means that, for example, if you made a claim for benefit on 1st October, then had to wait 14 days for your interview, the payment would'nt pay for the 1st 3 days, but you could get an interim payment from 4th oct to 14th oct., without having had the initial interview.
