And the shower was cold this morning! I think the gas boiler had blown out so I've lit that now (I think).

my ex-boss at work is training to be a sparks and he was telling me which things it's worth switching off. Think he mentioned washing machines as well as phone chargers etc

Well it was definitely cold so I'm getting the impression that it's not actually.

The one downstairs is definitely electric, but the upstairs one is a power shower but I don't think it's actually electric iyswim.

I'll put the gas water heating thing on later and see if that heats up the water in the shower.

Ah, it sounds like you've got an electic pump for it but it's just taking water from your hot tank.

So yeah, you'll need to have the boiler on to heat a tankfull - just not on 24/7 either, eh?
