a 'penalising gas guzlers' question

Exactly. And yet the tax would still apply. Very silly.
I dunno, really. Surely the hiked tax might put them off buying something they're rarely going to use (although I fancy this discussion has already got a bit silly - who buys an expensive car and then only uses it twice a year?!*)

*Apart from popstars and lottery winners, perhaps.

My main beef is people driving 4x4s around cities and towns anyhow and that's where I think the fuckers should be taxed where it hurts.

Mine too. And the fact that there is apparently no hint that there would be any kind of tax relief for people with a legitimate need for a vehicle that is considered to be high emissions compounds my belief that this is a knee jerk, vote chasing idea and actually little to do with real attempts at addressing climate change.

So, if vehicles are using biodiesel will they be exempt from the tax?
I actually think it will be biofuels, not oil, that will be the death of us all.

Well, that and the fastest growing consumer type of new car.

And yet, still uterly inconsequential when compared against consumption like water-out-of-the-bottle-when-it's-already-in-your-tap and central-heating-at-21C-year-round (but not in the pantry where I keep the veg flown in from Kenya).

I'd be happy to see bands of joy-less eco-Nazis prowling the country so long as they deal with the major offenders first, (e.g. hammering down doors and turning heating systems down to 15C as well as confiscating appliances found to be on standby and bulldozing homes found to be deficient in insulation) rather than just going after soft targets (e.g. those who can pay but won't kick off about it).

I'd even be prepared to believe that it all had something to do with green-ness if there was a proposal that the extra tax-on-tax-on-tax was to be hypothecated and spent entirely on building power generation barrages, rather than just sloshing directly into the bilges of Government revenue.

But it isn't -it's just tackle waving.

When we get a government that has a brain and can lead without pandering to every Tom Dick and Harry who lobbies them.
When we have a population that believes in community and the concept of "we're in this together".
When we can control our own moronic vanity and desires and the consumption that brings.

Then maybe we have a chance????????

but for now we should just bend over, open our wallets and let the powers that be shaft us and relieve us of our hard earned cash in the name of environmentalism.
