A Model Allotment for Dulwich Park - campaign suggestions?

Mainframeguy

new but not raw, I hope
Hi - I'm new around here, but I have something to post about so pardon me not looking for the "new here" thread.

A friend of mine is quite active in a plan, sponsored by Dulwich Going Greener, to establish an allotment as a model for how one is run within the public space of Dulwich Park.

I think it is a great idea.

But I also know the area, the people in the immediate vicinity, and the dreaded "Dulwich Society".

I reckon if there were a "vox pop" of ALL the park users though that it would be well supported. Yet I believe it is going through committees and the like which may squash it before it even becomes common knowledge to them that it is a possibility to consider such a thing for the park.

Anyone any ideas to help further this as a "cause" and get some popular opinion behind it rather than let it be squashed by the more powerful and established power lobbies?

Hope that all makes sense and is within "guidelines" I'll no doubt post agin on the thread if there's a dialog to be had!

We've had a similar project where i work, and i'm advising a mate on setting up something along the same lines in Cambridge. pm me if you want any advice :)

oh, and welcome to the boards :)

e2a: i'm quite local to dulwich so don't mind helping out on site a bit too!

ta - PM on the way

but what does e2a mean? Not seen that one before, guessing it is Edit To Add or something?

I'm not going to be so crass as to place it here, but I will mention that it is someone I am helping, so my PM will give you their email address since it would be them you'd have to contact to volunteer in (not sure if we have reached any "waiting list" stage, he'll tell you).

what's that got to do with the price of eggs?

I'm getting a bad feeling about this forum, is there any moderation? :hmm:
Yes, but if you're expecting us to shield you from the silly posts you might be in the wrong forum.

We do, however, have an 'ignore poster' function for filtering out contributions that don't twang your mojo.

oh nah - I'm a hardened IRC vet - a hide the size of a planet, me...

handy to know the iggy button is implemented - and even handier to have an idiot to test it on!

Suburban might be a good place to post for thoughts too? My experiences of trying to do allotments type activities were pretty painful I'm afraid!

dulwich is full of yummy mummies.
they have pennies power there.

they really get my back up

i agree with what topcat said (but in a nicer way) - focus your campaign at the richer end of E D (or dulwich) and tie in the organic food craze, and you may well get more support from people who would otherwise just be going down jojo maman et bebe or sugar or wherever else, and who wouldn't even consider supporting a load of hippies and some recycled ground ;)

good luck with it - if i end up sticking round dulwich, i'd be interested in maybe getting involved in the project? :)

ps - ed - 'twang your mojo'? :D

Just to clarify something - this is not MY project, but I know the person who is proposing it and will co-ordinate volunteers etc.

So if anyone is interested (and remember it has yet to garner official sanction, the main point of the thread was exploring how to help with that) then they should PM me and I'll give them the email address of the contact who is putting this forward with the sponsorship of "Dulwich Going Greener".

Where exactly would the allotments be sited?

Are they intended for private use?

it's a good idea.

although there is a shit load of existing allotments just across the road pretty much, why not use them?

have Southwark spent all the money they got to spruce up the park i wonder?

try and get the Deli's on board in the area maybe.

one in West Dulwich, couple round the village (although one charges about £400 for a potato) and one on that road to Herne Hill from the village.

Didn't used to go over E Dulwich way as much when i lived in West Dulwich but sure it is similar that way.

Top idea! thanks - yeah they'd be right into it if they can claim their produce is "locally sourced. organic, hand-grown" And we could even try to get some gastro pub on board.... Only problem is I never frequent these places - but I'll have to try to find someone that does or something....

Anyway, really useful idea, thanks!

Hmmn. That was on the very moderate scale of abuse around here.
I'm sure - maybe I was having a "sensitive" day? Probably it was because I was extremely new (my first post, I think) and someone who shall remain nameless had referred to a "rumoured racism scandal" here or something, so I was expecting bigotry (not found much yet though).

The site location is up for discussion - there's a spot discussed near the "middle gate" onto the South Circular where there's a house too.... Another candidate is near the bike hire I think.

The model allotment as I understand it will be run by a team of volunteers to show off how and allotment is run - there are others like this. It will be one (large?) allotment and NOT for private use.

the people who run the Italian one on Park Hall Road are really nice, i lived next to it for a few years. they own another one in the area.

they might not be interested in produce, i dunno, but they always have posters up for local things as well. get nothing without asking etc.

the one in dulwich village opp the Greyhound definitely sells organic veg etc.

by the bikes would be a good spot. most people using the park use that area/the cafe/area round the ponds etc i reckon.

there are at least two junior age schools in the village as well who might be up for it

good luck with it :)

...there are at least two junior age schools in the village as well who might be up for it...

indeed - my daughter went to one and is at the other ;) I'm definitely going to take it up with them as a parent. The guy proposing the whole thing has already spoken with the Headmistress, but I know she has so much going on that it is not going to feature so much as her new pond or the schools own gardening.

Thanks for the other info. All useful, the proposer is away until next week - I must remember to point him at this thread when I am helping him out with his emails and computer usage!

The most obvious place to be involved would be the cafe in the middle of the park - not been there for a while and when I last went, round 5 years ago it was for a VERY unhealthy fry up so they may not be up for it, but to be grown and served in the park I think would tie in well

I think many Dulwich residents would really love to have allotments. Especially if they come with a person to do the digging. Perhaps they could get community service bods to do the double dig?

I think that the cafe has changed a lot and is supposed to be very good these days (i haven't been myself but this is what i've heard). If that is the case they may be interested in tying in with the allotment, eg being able to use and sell produce grown in the park.

there are a dick load of allotments in Dulwich near the golf course. hopefully this can tie in with them maybe.

some of it is really weird and odd stuff up in the woods. good place to do mushrooms.

I had one of those allotments about 11 years ago.. Right up against that golf course that famously would not admit Deniss Thatcher. It had the best view going, just under Dulwich Woods, you could see all of the London basin as you kicked back. The soil was clay, a no hoper.:)
