A lot of shallots.

Actually - Suplex is winning for ease here.....

I am thinking of baking some, pickling some and making story's tart.

And Dub doesn't like onions :D

I get suckered in by these tubs of veg for a quid that the grocer does and always end up with too many of one thing for not much money.

This week I seem to have bought a kilogram of shallots.

What can I do with such shallot of shallots?! :)

Any recipes or ideas?? I'm thinking mebbes chutney...or a pie
Shallots are incredibly poisonous, and highly dangerous. You should not consider putting them in the compost, or even throwing them away, as you are likely to find yourself responsible for a toxic waste incident in your locality.

The best suggestion I can make to you is that you post them express delivery to somewhere with the facilities for disposing of such a hazardous substance, so if you'd like to PM me, I'll give you my address, and you can be assured that they will be safely and competently dealt with.

Consider this a public service.

Pickled shallots in balsamic vinegar. You should get nice sweet onions without being too sugary. Ideal for accompanying strong mature cheddars.

I once put some shallots in the basket when supermarket shopping. By fate or by design, I can't recall which, they were the last thing on the conveyor belt and as they went and Flashman picked them up I said "That's sha-llot".

:D

I left them at work last night :(
But they were still here this morning :)
But I can't do anything until tomorrow with them :(
And there are shoots coming out of a few of them :D

Cos it's such a basic and essential part of normal cuisine - curries, stews, risottos etc etc.

That doesn't answer the question, does it? :p That's just a description of what an onion can be used for.

it's saying how versatile onions are and therefore how absurd to dismiss them out of hand - do you like curry? Most curries have onions in them

I can manage food that has onions in it - such as curry - i just don't like eating onions per se. And how did you conclude I dismissed them out of hand?

Anyway, why is not liking onions weirder than not liking butter beans, or ackee or something?

Good argument.. :p

Nah, it does get on my nerves though, the notion that disliking some foods is weirder than disliking others. It's inconvenient not liking onions, sure, but it's not weird

Dub's the first I've encountered
I've met a few. Indeed, the Small One here is fine eating onions if they're well cooked up in stuff and nobody makes any big mention of the fact that they're there, but won't touch raw onions, or big bits of onion (eg roasted with veg, yum). Her mum finds raw onion gives her indigestion, so she doesn't do teh raw thing, either.

I suspect that the Small One's antipathy has something to do with being 16, and petrified of the fact that she might find herself needing to Kiss A Boy sometime in the week following onion or garlic consumption, though, so she may not be a good example :D Onion Breath is a terrible thing when you're 16, and I don't think she took my suggestion that she carries a clove of garlic around to hand to the Boy In Question should the issue arise terribly well... :D

Oh yes it is

I do, I'm just not sure if it's worth arguing over - I don't have as much energy for fruitless debate as you do :p
