I installed ubuntu last week and really recommend it. I've installed a few distro's over the last year and this looks like the one thats going to stick around on my hard drive for the longest.
My top tips are:-
1. If you are installing onto a partition rather than a full hard drive, delete the partition before the install. That way ubuntu sees a large 'free space' on the drive, which it can then set up automatically for the install. If you can install it onto it's own hard drive, then so much the better. Also know the difference between hda and hdb, it'd be a shame to install over the top of your windows OS

2. http://ubuntuguide.org/ This site has made it a largely headache free process getting the OS to do what you want.

3. ubuntuforums.org lots more answers here

4. Don't uninstall gnome :o  :( like what i did by mistake

oops just pm'ed throbbin to say id send a blag cd then read this page and see jayeola beaten me to it by days
but have just burnt myself a copy of knoppix a 'live' distro (it runs from the cd and dosnt install anything to your hard drive so you can see what linux is like it runs a little slower than if it was installed but it does everything it says on the tin
can send out one of those if anyone wants :)

I'm gonna lob a distro on my old 80GB hdd, short and sweet answers please, no explanation, one or t'other. Kubuntu or Suse?

If anyone needs a Ubunto live/install cd then PM me. I just had a couple drop through my door....

You shouldn't be disabling the hard drive or floppy boot - you should just change the order they boot in, so the CD is first.

some puta won't allow that...well my desktop dunt...but lappy does...hence the disable on the Desktop..to test/run the thing on that...but i don't have net access on the desktop but intend to use Linux more on that so wanted to make sure it did work on it...I'll sort it net access later with me aerila issues....itn the meantime put it onto the lappy to post to see if it would access net coz prior to this I could even do that with a FULL install of Suse....blaa blaaablaaa...do you get my drift? :)

Thanks for help folks...I'll be back...but yesterday things went a bit pear shaped life_wise and concentration wise...agin  *looks at sun and conciders solar energy source.. :( ...but at least I got the things burnt and working...I'lll be back.

In the meantime...anyone got a explanation for the ability to "get" to some sites and others not while running the zSuse disk,,,then sometimes I can get to them(with repeated trying of clearing of caches/relaunchin of browser,,,bothe Moz and Konq) but not others on the same Server(ie my Hosting)...curious? :) ..something todo with smppd(wtf?)

Right,
I have, thanks to a kind soul on here (Jayeloa), an Ubuntu disk.

I want to install this onto a PC that already has WIN 2K pro - what I wanna know is does the Ubuntu install process automatically create another Partition or what? Or will it simply overrwrite the existind data on the HD? I know Ubuntu is not a 'live' linux distro - so it won't run the OS from the CD right [right?]

I have had a look on their website and can't ascertain if installing Ubuntu will:

1) overwrite WIN 2K,
or
2) create another partition by itself,
or
3) will it install next to the existing data already on the HD and become dual boot,
OR [sorry]
4) will it install next to the existing data already on the HD and only become a linux machine if I boot from the CD?

I think I am right in saying that:
UBUNTU is not a livelinux distro and needs installing to the HD, therefore, I need to find out how to, and then create a blank partition on my C: and then find out how to install to that new partition [the new D:] and how to make it dual boot and give me 'choose an OS' at startup

is that right?

yay it partitions itself! :D

If you do not want to erase an entire disk, or if you want to customize the partition layout, choose “Manually edit partition table” from the menu, and the next screen will show you your partition table, how the partitions will be formatted, and where they will be mounted. Select a partition to modify or delete it. Remember to assign at least one partition for swap space and to mount a partition on /. Appendix B, Partitioning for Ubuntu has more information about partitioning.
