A high quality restaurant in SW or South London, please?

Has anyone recommended Tsunami in Clapham (just by Clapham High Street BR Station)? Japanese restaurant.

My favourite restaurant in London, simply for the flaming scallops (which come in their shell, flaming, and in a lovely sauce with fish eggs that pop in your mouth...It's nicer than it sounds).

It's a quality place and £80 will be about right for two people. I find that is a better place to go to in a larger group though so you can really tuck into a variety of dishes.

Upstairs on Acre Lane is very good. I've been 3 times now and it's been really good food everytime, also very good service. I think the set menu is now £20 for 2 course and £25 for 3. The portions ok size, though slightly depends what you have.

Went to La Menara last night [under the BT Tower] and the food was excellent, different, [more than] plentiful [the South is generous like that, generally speaking!], the little corner table for two really nice, cosy and comfy and just a really cool experience in a lovely and cushy North African decor!

We got the Menu for two [£19.90 per person, I think], which has a three [or was it thirteen?] course feast experience to die for...

The starters [cold and hot] could indeed feed 4, as someone mentioned, and after the first big loaded plate, just as we had doubts about finishing it, there comes another one with falafel and so on [additional hot ones]. Fab!

Then Lamb Tagine [a la Kleftiko = the whole leg of lamb, slowly cooked, falling apart and melting in your mouth] to live for, with prunes, almonds etc. with lovely Moroccan bread and Chicken Bastille [chef's special, sweet pastry, eggs etc., not too big but plentiful, nevertheless, especially having in mind the starters galore] that was quite unlike I ever had before...

We had Moroccan Syrah Rose wine [the first Rose I ever liked enough not to make fuss over it!], since my GF likes Rose and I don't think I ever enjoyed a simple bottle of simple sparkling mineral water [Highland Spring] with loadsa lemon and ice before...:D

We were offered tea or coffee [too much, thanx] and then a lovely light fruit salad.

All that for less than £30 pp [£59.50, I think] and the excellent and very friendly service was included. Since my GF wanted to go to even double that I felt vindicated to have undertaken all this research... Pity we missed the belly dance but we got there early on Monday  and it was nearly empty, so quiet and peaceful...

Thank you kindly, once again! Plenty to explore for other occasions! For all situations and pockets!

===========GREEN LANES: CHEAP AND GREAT!!!============

Oh, one more: on Green Lanes [between Manor House and Turnpike Lane tube stations] there are a lot of Turkish, Kurdish, Greek etc. restaurants, patisseries and shops of excellent quality and very cheap, too!!

I warmly recommend Gaziantep [great food and good decorum, too, nice service] for, say, Iskender kebab [not a kebab, really] for restaurants. Imagine eating and drinking "like a king":D for a tenner...

Or Yasar for shops, with special bakery next to the main shop, with all manner of Meds/Mid Eastern specialities [feta, yoghurt, humous, seasonal fruit and veg or better quality, since it’s from Cyprus, Greece, Turkey etc., homemade bread and pastries and so much more to drooooooooool over!!!] - ALL VERY, VERY CHEAP!!!

Or the Baldwin's butchers for wild rabbit, venison, boar, pheasant or so much more... Yum!

You'll quickly forget about any Satan's Stores [Tesco etc.], for sure!!!:D

The Master of Budget Living...:D

The Three Monkeys in Herne Hill (opposite the Half Moon) does really nice Indian food. Went the other week, loads of very nicely cooked food in fairly posh surroundings and plenty of wine, came to about £70 for two.

What was the service like ringo? The one time we went the food was very good but the service was some of the worst I've come across. Slow, wrong dishes etc.

The service was really good. They arrived just in time to pour wine, take orders and plates etc, without being pushy or in the way. It was a Thursday night, about 8:30pm, place was about half full. Food was great too, recommended for a first date, she was quite impressed :)

Gawd, it's about 5 years or more since I ate in 3 Monkeys.

Actually it's not a bad option for a special occasion - unless I've got false memory syndrome it's got that impressive walkway when you enter the restaurant and some of the (open) kitchen on display. It was very pleasant in there indeed.

Ya it's like you remeber it tarranau - great decor.

Hard for me to trust a place again when I've had such a bad experience though. And also to spend £70 on a curry when Tooting is just down the road, though I do realise thats not really comparing like with like.

I know what you mean, but it is a different experience really. 3 Monkeys used to do a more affordable Sunday buffet which was actually really good - top breads straight from the Tandoor and some fine fish dishes - but I've no idea if that's still running.

Have you been to Mirch Masala in Norbury since they took over the shop next door btw. It's actually looking fairly flash in there now. Always worth a visit that place.

I've been to the three monkeys four or five times. The service has always been dire, even after a change in ownership though the food is superb. It gets a kicking in the latest Time Out guide over this, which is a shame.
