A couple of cleaning questions

Well, to be honest, you will have to put some weight behind the Astonish... but I'm pretty lazy, and it's not beyond me...

That's what b/f is for ;)

Plus, I can't do all that rubbing because it's like fingers down a chalkboard, keys scratching a car

*shudder*

I like Astonish cos it's environmentally friendly, and for those who worry about such things, it's vegan too.

You eat it too   :D
(Seriously that stuff is v.good)

For the draining board I think it's soda crystals mixed with some lemon.

Edit: Just checked the soda crystal website and it says Soda Crystals should not be used on aluminium - use borax instead.

It gave me a giggle when I saw that on the package. I wonder what it would taste like? [/wonders]

But for serious full-on vegans, they want everything to be vegan don't they. I knew a vegan who wouldn't use horseshit on the garden, on principle, even though the horse lived next door and was perfectly happy. Don't ask me to explain - I've tried to understand, and have just had to accept that some people can be fundamentalists about anything. The really puzzling thing was that they kept a pet dog, even though some full-on vegans consider keeping a pet as tanatamount to keeping a slave. [/derail]

It worked! Well, the vinegar worked on the shower door and now it's all sparkly. And the Astonish removed quite a bit of the hob stains, but there are still some marks left. Should I have left the paste sitting there for a while before scrubbing? When I did leave it for a minute or so it seemed to dissolve/disappear.

Yay, missfran!

You don't have to leave the Astonish to work - it's pretty inert stuff. When I first started using it, it took a few goes to get everything off. Just do as much as you feel like at a time, it'll all go in the end.

My sister has commented, in tones of awe, about my clean stove top since I started using Astonish :D

I don't think it disappears - I think it just dries.

I use one of those silver non-scratch scrubbers with the Astonish. I'll try to find a picture...

Can't find a picture link for a silver pot scrubber....

I get mine from Tesco. They're great, make the Astonish work even better.

And they're alright on a stainless steel stove?

Oooh, probably not... You could try it on a secret hidden spot, under the edge of the door or something.

Is the Astonish okay on stainless steel? It is an abrasive.

ETA the silver scrubbers (and Astonish) are great for getting burnt food off my pans :o

Yes, the Astonish was fine on the stainless steel.

Really? I've managed to bugger my new hob a bit already by using Flash with bleach on it and then a green scratchy which I thought wouldn't scratch but did :(

I shall get the Astonish out

Well, at least I think it was fine. I'll have another closer look this evening.

I'm sure you would have noticed. I felt like a kid who wasn't capable of being given a nice thing to look after and should have had it taken away :o

Those green scrubbers are dreadful - they rip things to pieces. I never use them. The silver scrubbers are tough enough, and don't scour like the green ones. I think there muct be some metal in the green ones.

Missfran - I'm worried about your hob now :( I didn't think to warn about scouring marks....

I think Trashpony is right though - I'm sure it would have been noticeable at the time.

Oooh, Trashpony, I know this feeling. I was given some wonderful socks for Christmas and washed them too hot and they shrunk and felted up. I was sad and embarrassed, felt like a fuck-up kiddie.

The hob top is fine, no scratches. :)

I shall get the Astonish out this weekend then :)

While we're on the subject of cleaning, does anyone know a good way to clean silver which doesn't involve pink gunky stuff? I've got jewellery that's looking a bit grubby but I don't want to coat it in that stuff or I'll never get it off.

You can get liquid silver cleaner (£3.99) or a silver cleaning cloth (£2.49) from Argos.

Cleaing silver:

Either

Place some tin foil place in a plastic bowl add hot water and a tablespoon of soda crystals. Put the silver items in make sure they are touching the foil watch the tarnish magically lift off.

OR

Make a paste of lemon juice and baking soda and brush this onto the jewellery with a toothbrush. Let it dry brush it off and polish it with a soft cloth.

But these are for silver, not silver plate.
