A 20 year olds view of Griffin/QT facebook and all

I'm the one who wrote the OP and I do think that I am not a good example of a non "blank sheet" cos I consider myself to be more aware than the average kid my age.....I would say that a lot of kids my age ARE "blank sheets" which has been shown when I checked my facebook today and four of my friends now want to vote for the BNP and have pledged to do it together.....They hadnt even heard of nick griffin 3-4days ago but facebook made 4 extra votes for the BNP..... dont underestimate facebook! bloody scary though! lol
OK, so what do you do about it? Interested in your opinion.

I got about 3 paragraphs in before getting angry and deciding the writer is an idiot.
I'm fucking fed up of ignorant people speaking for my generation. "We don't watch the news, we don't read the papers etc."
A huge percentage of people I know the same age as me (19) are politically aware - in fact more so than the passively interested, believe what The Mail says middle agers I know.

FUCK OFF.

/rant over

Be interested to read more about your political awareness drachir? Does your political awareness lead you to think that people who are not quite aware as you are idiots and ignorant?

I don't think people who are unaware are ignorant and idiots, I think people who are unaware then claim to be the voice of our generation and say we're all like them are ignorant and idiots.

There was a 'report' from some intern at Morgan Stanley a while ago that claimed similar, ridiculous things.

Quite a lot of us have interests outside of Facebook and YouTube, if you don't then that's your business, but don't try and speak for an entire generation.

who claimed to be speaking for your generation?

who claimed to be speaking for your generation?

Well, it would mainly be these bits:
I am not personally that knowledgable about politics at all and I think its a fair thing to say that most of my generation are not. in fact i would go so far to say that probably about 1 in 30
With added bullshit statistic!
that is the state of my generation.
This bit tops it off:
my generation now formulate a large amount of our knowledge and interests from facebook and youTube. We dont tune it to the news, we dont read the papers, nor do we follow political websites. We get our news from facebook.

afaics he's talking about his generation where he lives (and he says 'most of my generation once' ) the people he goes to college with and sees out ..

so what % of ALL kids are interested in politics do you think? i have no idea though it seems low though maybe his 3% is too low .. 3% is i guess 1 person in each school class.

and tbh it's sad to see you jump in with insults and stuff .. IF you disagree ( and you clearly do) show where and why and how he is wrong instead of just mouthing off :)

I know plenty of 20ish people that don't care much about politics, under an honest estimation about a quarter/third of the people I knew at school/ see occsonally now pay lip service to the BNP when with another friend who's racist. But they don't really seem to care one way or another it's just a social thing said to fit in at school and carried on afterward. None of those people I've met since QT have even mentioned it, don't think they even noticed. But a lot of the other people I know that aren't racist and wouldn't normally talk about politics watched it and either laughed at him or hated him and rant about him. Have mainly been in Todmorden in calderdale just down the road from Burnley which tho I dunno the figures probly has the same kind of employment and stuff. I'm fairly sure that a really high proportion of Tods population fuking loathe the BNP and since Burnley wake up everytime they hear something about them cos they're determined not to let even that attitude arise just down the road. The people I'm on about are completely normal 20ish factory/education/council working/job seeking rave/pub going people as well.

Apologies for being like that... I should have said it properly, I was just in work, stressed and stuff like this gets my back up.
So, sorry for the insults.

I still really don't think it's fair to be throwing around completely guessed statistics about an entire age group. It's all anecdotal, and there are so many variables.
I'm from a small-medium sized, possibly a bit deprived town (population 40,000) - Bridgend.
In the state comprehensive I went to, we were encouraged to talk about politics and most people did have their own views and affiliations, and at least a general idea what was going on.
I'll admit that it does seem to be the more middle class kids that are actively involved or members of political parties, I'm not sure why.

Oh, and for the record most people seemed to lean towards Lib Dem.

Apologies again.

Of course, nobody other than Labour ever gets into power (aside from the mainly Lib Dem coalition council a few years ago) - 'pin a rose to a donkey/arrogant, incapable, expense fiddling career politician'...

For the record, I was speaking to a 19 year old from Sunderland the other day. Just started a degree in Northumbria and lives at home still, done a paper round from being young and he now works for Currys as well as doing a degree.

He thought Jack Straw did very well indeed (at which point I went 'hmmm'), and he thought Griffin was very poor. He raised these points without being fed them or any questions. It seems the left lives.
