90s british 'alternative' music - it was shit wasn't it?

Milesy- Every single one of your posts on this thread has been gospel. Apart from where I think you said that the wonderstuff used to be good, I glossed over that part. PWEI were and still are, judging by the January gigs, the dogs bollocks. They are in the recording studio now actually, so that should be interesting.

Senser were still shit hot last summer when I saw them live, I think it was in Stoke Newington somewhere. And they are playing again somewhere pretty soon- the 6th Oct I think.

Ireland did better than Britain in the 90s
Ash
My Bloody Valentine
Therapy?
I'd hqave those three over Teenage Furry radio any day, but the yanks really did own the 90s and ianw didn;t even mention the greatest of all time in his list.

Yeah, but IMO by far the greatest of the three there was MBV, who only released one album in the '90s and then disappeared - and even that was an album whose sessions commenced in 1989. :p

But let's face it, the vast majority of people only got into Primal Scream in the 90s.

but i saw them in 86 - that's nearly half a decade before the 90s. Gillespie's band is a child of the 80s. I don;t really care when most people got into them.

It was alternative British music that was around in the 90s though, if you went to any alternative clubs in the early 90s Primal Scream were always played.

It proves how shit British bands were in the 90s then doesn't it - that there were so few decent bands that 80s survivors were producing the best music

Um...

Stiltskin.

And Dodgy. Embarrassed as I am, I really like 'Sandman' and 'If you're thinking Of Me', and I was had an audition playing keyboards for them. They were reet nice and asked me what I would like to play, and we played those two. I was made up, ah tell thee - made up.

Didn't get the gig though

Seems to me you're being wilfully obscurantist... :p

... which was their third album...

very true, but then that also rules out pwei and the wonderstuff. 'poppies say grrr' came out in 86, eight legged groove machine was 88. the best senseless things and snuff stuff was in the eighties too.

Was that the one they re-released as 'Now For A Feast' (with 'Candydiosis' and 'Like An Angel' on it)?

they were great live then too. i went to their first gig as a "hip hop" band. full bill was poppies, loop, the shamen and the wonderstuff. that was the shamen in their "drop" psychedelic rock phase - absolutely fantastic. the howls of protest from the die hard indie kids at the poppies conversion was hilarious. i was also at the gig when the primals unveiled their new heavy metal direction, in between 'sonic flower groove' and the second record. the cuties were gnashing their teeth that night. i loved it.

shirley's scottish, previously in goodbye mr mackensie, blokes were american.

i went to three dates of a curve tour in the early nineties and managed to miss them playing on every date...! i left the show in london just before they came on to go and see salt n pepa at the hammersmith odeon.

:)

Garbage were American. But they in fact shamelessly ripped off Curve, who were one of the genuinely great British bands of the 90s.

I liked Curve till I saw them live - they were shit.

The mighty Senseless Things, Curve, Midway Still, Catherine Wheel, Th' Faith Healers, Gallon Drunk, Therapy? (first two EPs were among two of the best of that ilk i have ever heard) the much loved Leatherface, China Drum not to mention all of the dance music that was coming out? all wrapped up in lovely deadline magazine....

*digs out old converse and 'pop kid' t-shirt*

the early 90s were a great time...

Wow...sounds like a truly seminal moment. An indie Dylan goes electric no less!

I loved 'This Is the Day, This Is the Hour, This Is This' - a perfectly-crafted hip hop record way ahead of its time and unjustly overlooked in retrospect. As for the Primals, I thought the eponymous MC5ish album was really good - and much as I loved some of the stuff on 'Screamadelica' I couldn't help but wish they'd taken the 'Ivy Ivy Ivy' route a bit further.

'Now For A Feast' looks to have been the '5 A Side' 12" plus 'Sweet Sweet Pie', 'Like An Angel', 'The Devil Inside' and 'Orgone Accumulator' - on Chapter 22, cat. no. chaplp33. A first rate buzzsaw headrush of flash-in-the-pan vignettes...they don't make 'em like that nowadays! :D
