90s british 'alternative' music - it was shit wasn't it?

pwei (and a lot of their stuff was bobbins)

nah, it was all great!! the early stuff was very rough and ready, especially on "box frenzy" when you could tell they were still getting to grips with the new technology, but i can honestly say that i love every track on every album they've done, and all of the b-sides too :) saw them for the 8th time this year when they did the reformation tour and they were absolutely fucking ace :D :D

right then...

radiohead, super furry animals, belle & sebastian, elastica, pj harvey, god machine, teenage fanclub, bark psychosis, spiritualized, suede (first two records), huggy bear, stereolab, cornershop, tindersticks, boo radleys (pre-britpop), gorky's, mogwai, prolapse...

fucking back to the planet were awful! and all that cringeworthy dance/rock/hiphop stuff - senser, credit to the nation, collapsed lung... it were all turd.

i seem to remember the boo radley's 'giant steps' being really good, but haven't listened to it for probably 10 years. can anyone confirm or deny this?

Edited for taste :p :
pj harvey, god machine, stereolab.

God Machine were American (although based in UK) and Stereolab are partly French, but I'll grant you PJ.

Several of these get my vote too. We forget so quickly. GYBE too.

when did you last listen to it?

quite some time ago because i've lost the tape i had of it, although i have been looking at getting a copy of it from amazon or e-bay recently, as it happens :p

but even if i've not listened to it for ages doesn't mean i can't think it's good. there's loads of records and CDs i ahve at home that i rarely listen to and i still think they're brilliant.

Very true. I was going to start the same thread actually a few days ago, but forgot.

When i was a teenager I was very into 'indie disco' music, but hated all the British stuff. It was all either wavy stuff like neds etc, that was neither catchy nor heavy, just a din (yet without the head banging quality of metal) or it was reactionary old dunderhead dad-rock dressed up as indie, like the bluetones, stereophonics etc.

I was way more into American music in the 90s...

nirvana, mudhoney, rocket from the crypt, pavement, sebadoh, silver jews, slint, bitch magnet, tortoise, buffalo tom, plush, palace brothers, scud mountain boys, superchunk, apples in stereo, flaming lips, mercury rev, shellac, the breeders, poison idea, labradford, yo la tengo, sleater-kinney...

and that's just the tip of amazing american stuff put out in the nineties.

True, but the thread is about the crap british music of the 90s...

it was certainly better than now, as far as i'm concerned!
edit: and senser were most definitely, definitely not shit! damn it!

yep, the yanks were where it's at in the 90s, no question. but british stuff? so far we've got pulp, pwei (and a lot of their stuff was bobbins), radiohead (ditto) and supergrass.

i'll ignore posts relating to the senseless things and carter.

I would have to add St Etienne, One Dove (the most overlooked band ever) and Primal Scream in there...

Actually, if you read the thread thoroughly, I think you'll find that it's about the crap british music of the 90s...

I quite liked Senser, but dunno if I still would. But Credit to the Nation, even that I thought was quite crap at the time. The only reason it was so well known was that he sampled Smells Like Teen Spirit, thus causing the frequent occurrence of many grungers piling onto the dance floor before realising it was a rap song.

And it simply wasn't very good rap.

Play CTTN next to Roots Manuva these days and it would be like Barnet playing Barcelona.
