6 arrested in Newcastle before demo even starts :peaceful protest about civil liberty

free spirit

more tea vicar?
sorry for cut and paste, but it i can't be arsed to rewrite it and it's from an email not websource...

this is quite worrying really - a load of mates of mine got nicked last week on their way to protest outside the EU justice ministers meeting in newcastle about the loss of civil liberties and ID cards (bizzarely enough). Thing is they all got nicked a good distance from the demo, with the car actually being targeted by the police on the road before they'd even got close. The protest hadn't started at this point, and the protest planned was jsut to be a small symbolic demo.

Those nicked have had their mobiles confiscated and houses raided, all for wanting to make a peaceful point about the erosion of our civil liberties - if this is the freedom and democracy we're supposed to be spreading around the world then count me out

Reminds me of when a load of hunt sabs from Brighton were nicked for 'Breach of the Peace' at a cub-hunting meet. It was about 4am and the rozzers had to wake the sabs up to nick them.

These are really worrying times.
We're loosing the right to protest. The new offence of 'glorifying terrorism' is going to make things even worse.

Yep couple that with new witchhunt to weed out "extremist" groups in Unis (expanded to include far left groups now so it's not just the Muslims...), the police have a shoot to kill policy that noone was told about until it went wrong, future aint looking to bright really...

yeah - they used to wait until protesters had actually done something wrong before nicking them - or at least wait until there was a protest going on, nicking people before a protest had even started on a just in case basis is really worrying imho.

I'd also be utterly buggered if they nicked my phone - one of the phones they nicked was actually someone's work mobile. how can they justify this?

Except for the ~40 newspaper articles that mentioned it over the last two years they did keep it very quiet didn't they

Fair enough, I concede that it was reported and that I was overstating by saying noone but how many people were actually aware of it (even with so many reports?)? Hmmm, you know this might make a good poll!?
