500 Britons leave per day

I always forget I'm an immigrant as I was born in Oz :D

My old man fucking hated it though, he claims Queensland in the 70s was a lot like South Africa at the time.

Only in the 70s? ;) :p

Could imagine that 500 people a day are leaving, it countracts the immagration somewhat.

I only left the UK cos was offered work overseas and thought Id be back home in a couple months, 14 years later still havent seemed to have returned and nowadays its not something I yearn for anymore, a few weeks back every couple of years are enough to charge me up again.

Can see small changes in the UK every time I go back for a visit, biggest change I notice is how dumbed down TV has became these days and kids seem to be really cheeky but thats just me changing no doubt.

The UKs still a great place, its thought of very highly by most people Ive came across.
Strange cos when I was a kid I hated Autumn time but now I love being back in the UK then.
*Wanders off muttering about how leaves were better when I was a lad*

I could easily be one of those 500 someday.

I have already lived abroad for short periods, two sessions of 6 months apiece but I would have liked to extend those to a couple of years each.

I can certainly see myself trying to retire abroad.

I have to say, I've been giving the matter of emigration a great deal of thought recently. If I could, I would move to France.

What do you mean 'if you could' nino?? You can mate, you can! Nothing to stop you except your own doubts. And stop thinking, just do it.

Where are you off to, Ann?

The groping bit made me think of japan, but i don't think it gets that hot there. I then think of somewhere in the UAE, but i was unaware that groping took place there, but certainly you get the 50 degree heat.

Mebbe she'll be along to tell us!

I never emigrated per se, but after 16 years away, i have become a de facto emigrant.

For me the best 5% of time can be spent in britain. But the problem living there is the rest of the time. It's mostly spent either working, or being stressed (eg worrying about debt), or being stuck inside due to appalling weather.

Whereas living abroad i get good times about 95% of the time, but can never do those brilliant 5% things.

But i cannot not add that for me britain took a bad wrong turning when it basically decided to adopt the american model for its society and way of life.

And finally, can there be a country anywhere in the world with a people who are more cynical and more complaining of life? I would say that in essence the UK is a real negative place to live. A place where life is taken for granted, where complaining is rife. Emigrating gives such a boost and life force to the energy of the soul. The soul is reenergised, and life becomes exciting.

So does food...

I didn't emigrate according to any plan, it just sort of happened and now I've spent more of my life over here than I have in the UK. Initial reasons were love, no real alternatives in UK (and I was here already, being posted here for most of my time with the army) and pure curiosity. Now staying because I enjoy the work I do here (very little chance of doing similar anywhere else) and I'm basically settled (though not gone native yet, more a sort of in between thing, wont get me in Lederhosen ;) ) and Germany is in a great position to explore Europe being as it is almost slap bang in the middle.

Money, that's one thing that stops me. I can't go anywhere without money.

France has a generous welfare state...

I shouldn't have thought that moving to France, if you can speak French, would be radically different to moving to another part of the UK. Aside from the banking and getting work what's the hold up? Personally I reckon that there are a load of people on Urban who'd be a lot happier moving somewhere like France, Dennmark, Sweden or Germany...

I don't have the money to move anywhere just yet. I can't simply up sticks without first thinking of where I'm going to live and how I'm going to pay for it. I couldn't simply go to France and sign on straightaway. I also have family here who rely on me. So it isn't a case of me doubting myself, there are practical considerations too.

So you gotta wonder why he hangs around a London based website discussing UK politics...?

Fair play, so it's not just about cash...was just commenting on your reason given tho...

You should try it sometime.

:)

It sure beats sitting in, say, Northwood Hills, posting on a London based BB discussing UK politics.

:p

Urban actually has a fair sized international contingent and at least a dozen in Asia.

:)

Woof

I'd go for UAE as well. Maybe she's off to Dubai or somewhere similar?

Groping's common in Japan?

Sell your computer! Nah, seriously, when i left i had one grand and because that was all i had i only got a one-way ticket. I also had a load of debt.

What i'm trying to say is that if you really want to emigrate, then you'll have to stop finding reasons to not go. You mention family, fair enough if you're married, but if you're single...

And if you are, then just go earn a whole load of bucks in holland for a while, then go somewhere real cheap and see what happens.

It most certainly was about seven years ago. I've never been but i talked a lot to japanese girls who told me that indeed, it was very common. I doubt it's changed too much since then.

I have to admit it was more enjoyable a few years ago when the quality of posters and debate was higher, but it's still worth adding to my life.

As for hanging around anywhere, don't do that. As for UK politics, possibly it's something to do with the fact that i'm british, and this particular thread is pertinent to me, as an emigrant?

In any case jaed, you find all those posts of mine on UK politics that constitute a 'hanging around' on these parts. There's a good chap.

But if you've emigrated to Thailand then surely you'd want to discuss Thai politics...? When I've lived in foreign parts thats what I've tended to do, rather get hung up on whats going on in one particular part of the world. I've never understood the desire move ones live to another country, yet the mind stays at home...

And if you've emigrated, doesn't that make you Thai...? Unless you are just an ex-pat and are planning to come home...

I never emigrated. Just went travelling and never went home.

I do discuss thai politics, and often start threads for those interested in the country.

Outside of urban i very rarely discuss politics any more. There are higher things in life than the negative world of politics. Urban is a link to my past if you like.

I live in the world jaed, the world. I will talk about any part of it any time to anybody, and will not restrict myself in such ways that you talk of.

Incidentally, one reason to leave one's home (on this thread that means leaving the UK) is to quit getting hung up on the trivials in life.

Home for my mind is the world, not britain, nor thailand.

I am not, nor have ever been an ex-pat. I will never willingly go back to live in the UK. I am not thai, not yet. I may get lucky to be both thai and british in the future, but it's all to help me get through the crap that society chucks at us. For inner contentment, passports, visas, borders are all bullshit. I want none. I want inclusion not division.

I'm not selling my computer, what am I going to use to write my magnum opus?

I'm not married but I have a daughter and a young grandson and no, these are not 'excuses'. I'm not a 20 something, I'm damned near 50, so just upping sticks is not an option.

Ah look mate, fair enough. Firstly many profess to wish to emigrate, but find any number of excuses, just weeding you out from them! Secondly though, i'd say age is not a factor: i once went to an opening restaurant party of an ex-cabbie from london at a beach resort south of bangkok. 80 something he was, fit and healthy, and starting a new life. The smiles creased his face all night.

Anyway, if you really want to emigrate, you will!

You can work when you get there man!

How? I want to go to France. I want to teach English but I need a CELTA, that costs a lot of money and I just don't have it. What else would I do in France? Well, jobs are hard to come by for a start. I'm not waiting on tables or working in a bar. Been there, done that.

Make bread...??

I feel certain you could teach english without the celta. Privates for a start.

Pity you don't fancy thailand. You could do the celta more cheaply, and if you weren't worried about using it elsewhere, i could even teach our version to you myself where i work! Well cheap and excellent value of course...

Anyhow, good luck with it all. To be honest i want a whole heap of money not to emigrate, but to get work out of my life.

No, I cannot teach English in France without a CELTA. I've checked.

I want to go to France because well, I fancy it and I've been learing French for the last two years. There's also someone there who....
