The MS Society recommend eating plenty of fruit and veg though.

As would any sensible dietician/nutritionist.

I'm not a big fan of fruit. :(

Blood tests have shown nothing wrong with vitamin and mineral levels.

I even took 100% RDA multi vit and mineral tablets for a year which made not the slightest bit of difference.

I hate fruit - I can just about force myself to eat some tinned.

Veg is nice though :)

I dunno how old you are, but when I was younger I ate all kinds of crap and hardly any fresh fruit and veg, and I was always getting colds etc. In the last few years I've made more of an effort to have a healthy lifestyle and I am much the better for it, I think.

Not a fan of fruit and veg. I'd much rather pop some pills than eat 'em.

Sometimes I make the effort to include fruit & veg in some way in my diet, other times however...

Last time I went to the supermarket I was shocked & appalled how most of the fruit juices actually contained fruit juice. I want colourings and as many other E-numbers as they can pack in.

*writes letter to fruit juice companies*

*dies of malnutrition before letter is finished*

:p

cheers everyone again and will def be making chilli and some other yummy stuff...just eaten some roast tomatoes with gramary bread

you don't need more anyhum, it's not fat-free in any case...
and moderation is always a good thing.
Blimey. I'd rather rely on years and years worth of research into the impact of diet upon health and specifically the impact of eating lots of fruit and veg, than on platitudes.

But each to his or her own. :)

Wow. All that research that's been going on forever has now been disproven.

There are people out there it seems who can survive without consuming much fresh produce. Surely we are all diffierent but the majority do benefit from eating fruit and veg.

Mr Miggins is a medical anomaly (IMO!). Hardly a fresh thing passes his lips - and if it does it's only orange juice, potatoes or peas - and he's managed to live 37 years so far. BUT I think his skin and teeth would look better if he did eat more f&v so it obviously does have an impact.

Dietry requirements have been known about to some extent for centuries. That's why citrus fruit was carried on long sea journeys in sailing ships.

Up until this sudden appearence of needing 5 a day most people only had veg as part of the meat and 2 in their main meal without ill effects. So why this sudden more than doubling of fruit and veg intake?

Because research has shown that eating a variety of fruit and veg has significant health benefits -- it will cut the risk of cancer and heart disease, to name but two.

Most heart disease is caused through eating too much fat not too little veg.

In fact in this article beta carotene, which as an anti-oxidant is thought to reduce the risk of cancer, actually increased the risk of lung cancer in smokers by 18%

Don't smoke carrots. ;)

just meant it wouldn't be wise to overeat on the stuff,
á la 10 bananas a day or something (as my dad does and it's bad for him)
but could have phrased it better, i see...

english is not my first language anyhum :o

(and sorry, *of course* i can afford 5 fruits or more a day if i want to- was just trying to be "controversial" and silly- boredom etc. etc...)

stir frys are a great quick way to get veg - an onion, red or yellow pepper, some broccoli or pak choi and a chilli, some noodles - great & takes two minutes, if you're not veggy add chicken or what you will - chillis are crammed with vit c and v good for you - :)

I cook from scratch most days and probably have more than 5 portions/day. There are days when I'll get some chips and go to the pub, but I don't beat myself up about it and rush home to take multi-vits :)
