49 hours of community service for extreme animal cruelty

To be fair though there's a high chance that the animal is treated like shit and hit with a stick before being slaughtered.

Which isn't a necessary part of that process. It is in fact possible to slaughter animals without engaging in sadism along the way. If workers are kicking the shit out of the livestock instead of just doing their jobs, then something else must be going on. Whatever it is, I blame the bosses.

With modern technology it's looking increasingly likely that we might be able to grow meat without even having to deal with a fully-developed organism in the first place. Don't bother with stuff like the brain, just grow the muscles. Yet somehow I get the feeling I wouldn't be accepted as a vegan if I only ate such meat, were it available.

The problem with the first paragraph as you really don't know. Also I don't know if you can really ethically kill an animal before it comes to a natural end if you have the choice of other food sources. (This is really privileged position to be in though and obviously not everyone can do that.)

I'd consider you a vegan if that was all that you ate.

Going back to the original post though how does this compare to other cases in Australia? I agree it doesn't seem long. Is it a case of a dodgy judge or is that just standard for such crimes there?

I'm not sure it's really a surprise to be honest. Most people are massively disconnected from the natural world. I had to tell someone's kid off once because he was throwing jellyfish. When I said they were animals he replied "I guess...."

I take this was in the Falklands? did you actually eat one or are you just chain jerking?
survival course and or excuse by certain people to murder the wildlife:( seal was also foul we did stop the attempt to kill an orca mostly on the grounds that we couldn't eat a killer whale. not sure 5.56mm would cleanly kill an orca
goose was fine as was sea trout fished by grenade:D

My meat isn't drunkenly beaten to die a slow death. I don't think it's hypocritical to eat humanely slaughtered animals and be upset by the cruelty of this fucker who did that to the penguins.

You trust that your meat isn't beaten before it dies? I used to aswell. I used to buy local from a butcher where I could trace my meat. Really though you can't trust any of that can you?

It is hypocritical, but then life is full of hypocrisy. I'm a vegeterian, I should be a vegan with my view on animals welfare, but I've not reached that point yet. I know I'm a hypocrite, but I'm doing what I can. You will also find your own spot within that.

The idea of humane killing of an animal when it's not in pain doesn't seem right to me now.

Sorry if it's the wrong forum but this story just makes me so

Dismay at 'lenient' Australian penguin killer sentence

Joshua Jeffrey was convicted of aggravated cruelty to animals after he battered the birds with a stick while drunk on a beach with two others at Sulphur Creek in Tasmania state in 2016.

Why would someone even contemplate such a thing, even if they were drunk?

It's no different from middle class twats blasting pheasants with shotguns. There is a lot more condemnation of w/c people when they are drawn to the sadistic theatre of killing animals for pleasure and excitement.

Bugger what the vegans think, if someone invents sentience-free meat then I'm filling my boots.

I'm vegan and although it wouldn't be my main choice for food and am not actually sure I'd eat it myself, I have no problem if people want to eat it. Lab grown meat I mean.

I think ddraig's got me on ignore.

Probably because he can't simply whitewash anything I say with the accusation of "fragile carnist"
that's why this thread looked odd!
get over yourself ffs
had you on ignore for years (before fragile carnist was even made up!) for a multitude of reasons including your massive pomposity, aggressive posturing and general bullshit tediousness

There is nothing humane about taking the life of a sentient being who doesn't want to die just because you think they taste good, especially when there are perfectly good alternatives.

I've worked in a meat processing plant. I've no problem with eating meat or the way animals are treated. In my experience, although there's some maltreatment, in some plants, I didn't see any.

After slaughter was different.

You literally have the blood of your fellow earthmates on your hands. I hope you're proud of yourself. MURDERER.

Charmed, I'm sure.

But there really was no reason for you to feel you had to justify yourself, you know...

Technically killing for food is also killing for pleasure, given that we can survive quite happily without eating meat.
