42.9% youth unemployment in London .. comments?

Despite the fact that there have been no real jobs created amongst that figure of '2 million' new jobs, only part-time, exploitative temping jobs which for the most part shouldn't be legal or class as real occupations on official statistics.

To anyone who would like to stake the claim there are more jobs now than in the past... what new occupations are available now that weren't available under Thatcher?

Oh, well... supermarkets are employing more staff at the checkouts in their new hypermegamarkets... oh of course - we have plenty of construction work for those 'luxury apartments' being hoisted up everywhere, and lots of lovely call-centre work too...

No, that's not what I'm saying.
I'm saying that some of them do. According to the Aussie office of stats Britain has about 100,000 Aussie overstayers alone working in the black economy.

BTW, 100s of jobs in a city of over 6 million, whoop-de-fucking-doo.
How many of those jobs are temporary? How many of them are jobs that'll take people with no experience (as far as I know it's been a good 20 years since you've been able to walk onto a building site with no qualifications and pick up work, and about the same for a pub taking you on if you've never pulled a pint)?

I'm saying stop gobbing out the shit you read in your paper and prove it, and not with some spurious bollocks about "100s of jobs", either. Let's see some meaningful support for the load of old arsenuggets you talk.
 
young unemployment is a tragedy but nu deal is not the answer from what i can see nu deal is there to sap the resistance of young people and force them to take low paid meaniless jobs .where is the proper training if theres a shortage of plumbers and a young person wants to take the oppurtunity then give them proper training so they can get a job in said trade

A lot of people from countries like Poland, South Africa and Australia come here activelly seeking work...And a lot of British people dont want to work for the wages these people accept...I dont think your right to emphasise that many are working under the minimum wage...But the benefits system acts as a disincentive for some people to find work along with low wages....Having more people competing for these jobs obviously keeps wages down...

I have rarely met anyone Aussie, Kiwi, Saffa etc who is actually working for below minimum wage. Even casual bar work etc pays the min. wage, or slightly above.

A lot of the employers are big corporate pub/restaurant chains that could not afford to be seen paying an illegal amount.

And over the years I've lived in London, I've met a lot of working travellers doing all sorts of general office work that pays not badly at all..... all you have to do is to be able to type a bit, answer the phone, use Word, Excel etc. There are loads of office admin. type jobs around for anyone even a bit smart.

I wouldn't be surprised if some recent immigrants (especially those not here legally, or working illegally) aren't getting less than they should.

Youth Underemployment is not such a problem for the middle classes though.
And lets face it who would most of them prefer cleaning their houses,serving them meals, looking after their kids....A Black person born in the UK or somebody from Poland or South Africa....

A huge amount of young and not so young people have been written off in the UK. Racism and Classism are very much part of the problem.

And the idiots who pretend that mass migration from the new eu countries has had little effect on unemployment...Wot can u say about people like that....

The thread title is very misleading, it's 42.9% of 16 to 17 year olds , not 42.9% of youths . Plus a lot of those will be barred to jobs by their age.

fair play and i have to also say the figure does not sound right on reflection! BUT looking at this maybe it is ..

generally there are 75% of 16 17 year old in education .. and of the rest the unemployment rate has increased significantly .. is it possible in london the FTE rate is much lower and the unemployed as a % of non FTE is much higher giving the 42% .. say only 50% of 16-17 year old in London were in FTE .. and of those 80% not working would give and overall 40% ..

the princes trust put england figures of NEETs at 20% so that suggest london could have 40%

so the 42% can only make sense in terms of many people in FTE being classified as unemployed .. in which case as mauvais warned .. DODGY stats!

( btw the 18-24 rate stats seem pretty solid )
