Walked to primary school, in Glasgow. With mum, or neighbours kids and their mums, until around 7 or 8 I think, then was allowed to walk on my own.

Secondary school it was around a mile so either walked or biked. Only got lifts rarely if dad happened to be going that way and hadn't already left earlier or something.

Giles..

At first we'd walk accompanied and then after moving (when I was 6) my family and one round the corner operated a taking turns to drive kind of thing. Then when judged responsible enough we'd walk. There was a big group of us knocking on doors on the way. I think it might've been a mile.

5-10 is quite a broad range for kid development. I guess it depends on roads and if there's other kids to walk with.
