40th anniversary CD of Piper at the Gates of Dawn

Piper at the Gates of Dawn might be an album of specific tastes....i love it i suppose, because i like really far out albums by my favourrite artists, such as srgt pepper by the beatles, parade by prince, or midnite vultures in a tie break with one foot in the grave by beck......certain albums by artists u like speak to you more than others, i suppose, and that is what Piper does i think, depending on the person and what you want from an album.

edit for spell

Love it but Sgt Pepper's mostly toytown pop, really.

you love it though. Piper is like that too for people i think. Some write it off as '60's pop psychedelia' but have a close listen and the songs sound like mini symphonies with superb lyrical wordplays. Syd's last song on the album, 'Bike' has incredible lyrics that are whimsical and childlike. Like fairy stories. Matilda Mother is the same, and the riffs on Interstellar Overdrive - especially at the end - speak volumes.

Matilda Mother was origanally a Belloc rip off btw.

Have you heard the Stones Satanic Maesties - some people think it's beter than both Peper & Piper.

aint heard it but will check out deffos, because i am often hardpressed to find an album as diverse or imaginative as Piper. According to peter jenner and roger waters Syd was a person who came up with an idea every few minutes in the studio and its evident on this album, with the number of breaks and changes in the songs, as well as on this compilation where, for instance Apples and oranges has a really funky verse, but a really slow chorus that turns a bit operatic in certain spots. His imaginative use of words and the way he bounced them off tohe chords so perfectly is another reason why its so magical. I want all those experiences and tastes on the one album if poss. does the satanic majesties cover those trajectories?

on my first listen now so can't really say but it's The Stones trying to copy the Beatles - mostly stoned whimsey so far

She's A Rainbow & 2000 light years from home are stunning - (nearly) equal to A Day In The Life/Astromny Domine imho

eta: fuck me The Lantern is good

The Rolling Stones said:
You crossed the sea of night,
Free from the spell of fright
Your cloak it is a spirit shroud.
You'll wake me in my sleeping hours,
Like a cloud.
So, please, carry the Lantern high.

eta2 : ok so it looks like a load of bollocks but it works when sung honest:o

eta3 - right now I'm starting to think that The Village Green Preservation Society is better than the lot of them (except forever changes)
