4 x 4

Good on you for thinking of minimising the waste from the vehicle, but If you really value the family then you won't get a 4x4. They are generally less safe than cars or MPVs due to have poorer handling and a higher risk of roll-over.

Or, alternativley don't drive too quickly.

Surely the impact point on an mpv is just as high as on a van, 4 x 4 or otherwise?

And batboy, it sounds like the 4 x 4 you want is not that new. his suggests it may have the old 'two gearstick' type selector. Just drive it around in 2 x 4 on the roads and thats your fuel consumprion problem solved. And noone has a problem with 2 x 4 vans do they?

Estate cars no one complains about them and probably carry more stuff.
SUVs are an irrational want and the majority are driven by people who don't need or even use the capability built into them .Sooner the fashion for them the better .Buy one if you want just dont expect anything but jelousy or hatred .

Absolute bollocks. I can get far more on the back of my pick-up than I could get in an estate. Ever tried to get a pallete of bricks in a car?

Thought not.

Yeah - into the back of an old Golf. It's not that hard. Besides, a 4x4 isn't a pick-up.

Pick up truck is not an suv unless you have one of those crew cab things .Face it you can either have something to lug bricks or something to lug family .Trying to combine the two you end up comprmising on one or the other .

Really? I once had to drive to town to help a mate who was trying to load about 12 boxes of floor tiles into his mondeo because the exhaust was scraping the floor.......The suspension on golfs must be fucking good.

And my pick-up is a 4 x 4......I thought most of em were, having said that, I've only driven my hi-lux and one of them big transit jobbies.

You're not going to roll in town though - or at all at any sensible speeds. I do think there's extreme prejudice against "4x4s" - inverted commas there 'cos the tag is not applied to all-wheel drive vehicles particularly, just large ones.

If there are serious objections to poor fuel consumption, why not call for a ban on all powerful cars? Gratuitously fast cars are more wasteful arguably, since they can't even ferry things or people very well. Why, for example, should anyone buy a Porsche or Ferrari in this country? Why not ban those makes completely? They're clearly ineffecient and dangerous.

If there are serious objections to the height of the vehicle, let's at least apply them to all tall vehicles... there are more vans and lorries on the road than off-roaders. Or if statistical evidence of injuries and accidents is a real cause for action, then men under 21 should be banned from driving, because of the accidents they cause.

I can see why they get the press they do, and I feel the contempt when I see 15 of them parked outside a school in the morning. But I think a lot of the hatred is because of the conspicuous consumption represented by a new 50k Range Rover.

To my mind, an old Toyota Surf or something can be sensible. Cheap, moderately frugal diesel engine, roomy and reliable.

No one complains about builders who need them for work .The same thing driven for no other reason than getting bloke from A to B annoys other road users .

Aye, I never have a problem with any 'anti-4x4' stuff with mine, cos its an old, battered pick-up thats covered in shite.

The hi-lux is pretty good when its on-road and I'm driving it in 2 x 4.......it costs about the same as my old 1.6 saloon car to run.

This is the whole argument in a nutshell... With my 4x4 the only people who have a problem with it are hippies who should really find something useful to bitch about. And wash. Bitching about 4x4 when there a much better reasons to protest (ie, illegal wars, humans righs abuses, etc) is a bit pathetic. "Ooh, we're hard-nut protestors... Lets go hassle some footballers wives over their choice of transportation".

Dude, just get the 4x4, and stop all the explanations. It's ok.
