360 Advice

try wii sport , wii play , resi 4 , resi umbrella cronicles , no more heroes , metroid 3

wii sport maybe applicable for kids but its great fun

even with a high end pc i doubt you would find many games you like as a lot of them are on the box anyways

not too sure quite what you need to do , become a games developer and make the games you would like and to your spec perhaps ???

just got a second hand 360 off my mate (who was selling it cos COD4 made him feel sick and mass effect apparently consists of talking to people and then getting shot at by things you can't see.) Anyway... it's only the arcade version so I thought that the resident 360 community can tell me whether it's worth buying a hard drive, HDMI cable, one of those stupid headset things, what games to buy etc etc.

At the moment all we have is mass effect, command and conquer and something called Battlestations Midway, which looks complete cack.

No wonder he wanted to sell it. :)

If you're not impatient and don't mind playing the very latest games then buy ones a few months old and/or second hand games. I was in Gamestation today (the best videogame chain) and they had some good deals...

There was a two for £30 selection which included Oblivion, Crackdown, Virtua Fighter 5 and a bunch of other games that are well worth having. And there was a two for £40 selection which included the latest Burnout game, Devil May Cry 4, Halo 3, Orange Box etc. Mass Effect, Skate and Bioshock were in there but I can't remember which deal they were included in.

yeah, just bought halo3 and dead rising for £30 total...

old games are the best. If they'd had oblivion then that would have gone in the basket too... Maybe a trip to ebay will be in order when I get paid...

And how many of those are any good (there's only a couple of games I'd like, and half of them i've already played).

so... you don't like xbox games and you don't like wii games...

so... what do you like? cos those 2 cover pretty much everything from FPS's to yoga.

confused: assassin's creed. gears of war. Everybody I've spoken to says these games are rubbish, but they get really good scores on the net...
?

don't knoiw about gears of war but assasins creed is shit , the graphics look great but there is no gameplay there at all .

The best 360 games I've played are Dead Rising , Far Cry Instincts/Predator , Perfect Dark Zero, Halo3 ( although I didn't think it was as good as the first 2 ) and Crackdown

I don't have that many games though so it's not exactly a definitive list

agreed about creed. gears of war has a decent singleplayer, but it's short (which is the norm). The online is a buggy broken mess filled with utter utter idiots (ie americans). Dead Rising is ok, but the controls are horrific and trying to resuce people is made impossible dy deign of their stupidity. Halo 3 I found utterly dull. Crackdown isn't bad. Far Cry was good when i played it on the xbox, don't know what the next gen is like.

Don't pay any attemtion to reviews for games that are flavour of the month; you won't get anything remotely objective - just look at the reviews for gta4.

You're hard work, I'll give you that much.
What do you want me to say: that all the games for the 360 are great because other people say so?

Most of the stuff for the next gen consoles are bollocks. I've already played everything else I'm interested in.

You are getting your knickers in a knot over one post where i commented that the wii was aimed at younger gamers?

dear me

I wish they had sold Team Fortress 2 alone. That would be great.

yes. that is an interesting point. I could. How much does a trip to the doctor's cost these days?

ha! I just checked this website and it was blocked by my work firewall as it advertises "criminal skills.":D

Get an Xecuter Blaster 360 NE, apart from the daft name it looks like a pretty good piece of kit. I'm still waiting for mine but it should be here tomorrow so I'll let you know how it goes. Install is solder free and the kit comes with a tool that makes opening the case really easy.

hmmm.... you be sure to keep me informed y'hear? :)

actually, having looked at the site, it might help if you explain it all to me.... over PM if you prefer... you're usually good at things like that, I remember your invaluable help with my backing up of my ds games using that R4 card that time.

Not a bad price, but there's no real need for it as (a) the case can be opened within a minute providing you have the right tools and (b) firmware updates are now very infrequent and additionally seem to have come just about as far as they're ever gonna go.

I just don't like opening the case once never mind every time there's an update, which there may or may not be lots more of. That mod comes with the case tool and as I'd have to open the case once anyway and the tool is a tenner on its own then I'm happy to shell out £20 if it means never having to do it again.

tommers, there's a tutorial for installing the mod here. I'll let you know how I get on. :)

Sure yeah.

I'm presuming you know what drive you've got? IIRC you've had your 360 a while in which case you'll have either a Samsung or one of the earlier Hitachi drives. You'll also need a compatible sata card in your PC.

Have you read the tutorials for flashing the drive? I think Textbook 2008 is the best one - there's a youtube video by the same person that runs you through it too.

Thanks for that. :)

So even though I've got sata on the mobo I need a card? I've got the 360 hack pack with the Textbook tuts on.

From what I've read some onboard sata connections work. Most don't though, hence folk end up having to use a VIA VT6421a card (which is the one you'll find recommended in all the guides). You'll also need a compatible DVD DL writer; some are better than others - I use a Pioneer 115d.

Turns out I've got a BenQ drive and for flashing one of those my onboard SATA won't work so I've got that card you linked to. Afaict I'll need a dual layer dvd writer that allows bitsetting and I think if I update the firmware on my NEC 4570 then it will let me do this.

Thanks for the help. :)

The good news is the Benq is a doddle to flash :)

A bit of advice if you're going to be using the latest iextreme firmware though (1.41) with dosflash; the erase command on a lot of the tutorials doesn't work. The one you need is:

Code:
dosflash e xxxx 1 a0 1 4 c7 0

(where xxxx is the I/O port of your SATA).

Is 1.41 the one to go with rather than 1.4? I read that either 1.4 or 1.41 is borked and I can't remember which one it said, I've read loads about this tonight and it's all starting to melt into one.

Can you remember what sort of problems? According to the releaselog, problems fixed in 1.41 were
(v1.41) Read Sector fix
(v1.41) 8x firmware dashboard speed fix

ETA A problem I have had is that flashing the Xbox seemed to remove the patch I'd installed to play some old Xbox Original games. When I tried to reinstall the patch from the same CDR I'd used before, it wouldn't read it. Haven't had a chance to look into this yet.

It could be that Read Sector fix or I could be imagining it. Thanks for checking it out. :)

Can you flash in Windows now, or do you still have to do it by booting from a memory stick and using dos? I seem to remember there now being a Windows-based GUI for doing it - IPrep maybe?

I'm gonna get another 360 I think - an Elite with HDMI the newer mobo - which I I'm thinking of flashing myself. Dunno though as the Torx screwdrivers aren't cheap and I'd need the sata card I mentioned earlier. There's a guy near me who I met on a console modding forum who flashes 360s there and then for £20. He's must have done thousands - chipped my Wii while I waited too.

You use dosflash32 to flash from Windows but I've not tried it. I was about to buy a compatible SATA card from ebay when I remembered I had an old PC knocking around with a VIA-VT8237 southbridge. I just set it to boot from a USB pendrive with Win98 dos and dosflash16 on it and it worked perfectly :)
I just don't trust Windows not to do something screwy halfway through a flash.

ETA I already have a full set of Torx heads and other tools, and what with not having to buy the SATA card it was a financial no-brainer to do it myself. However, if you can get it done for £20 that's not much more than the card and tools will cost you, plus you're taking away that "what if I BBQ it?" feeling. As I think you said earlier on, firmware updates don't seem all that frequent now so it's unlikely you'll need to reflash for ages, if ever.

you really are in a minority of 1 here...

you even dislike GTA ...

as i've said before i don't think you get console gaming at all...

I've just started playing oblivion. :D

old news for most of you but it's exciting for me.
