FWIW the Greeks are up in arms about it too, largely because its bollocks.

Yes, I know its based on a comic book, but it uses a real event, the real names of participants, and (worst of all) its not their culture they are "re-imagining" in this way.

So what. It's fiction based on actual events.

When a historical film explicitly claims to be 'the true story' (Braveheart, King Arthur), then it opens itself to criticism. When it's abundantly clear that it's a fantasy with a historical setting (Prince of Thieves, A Knight's Tale), then so what?

It's basically a bloodthirsty horror film that sacrifices plot for a bit of visual wizardry. Just because it borrows its title and theme from a historical situation does not mean it is attempting to be 100% factual, or even anything like that. I really do think the people who are screaming fascist and trying to relate it to today's political scene are taking it to far.

because it isnt a "fantasy with a historical setting" - its based on a real event, with the real names of the participants, so it should be criticized for that (mainly by the Greeks, whose history it is).

Very odd that the Seppoes are out for spending money on a film where they didn't win?. Or do the gunships come over the horizon at the last minute and drop the apple pies on the surviving unwashed?

Spartacists eh? Whoever would've thought it?;) Where's Ernesto when you need him?

There were no seppoes in 400 bc., but americans like this movie.
Is your worldview in tatters?

But it very clearly isn't supposed to be a true account- unless you think people will really believe that the Persian army included misshapen monsters in its ranks. You may as well criticise Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure for misrepresenting Napoleon.

This is just mind-candy for fanboys. Expecting historical accuracy or even artistic merit from this is pointless. It shouldn't be taken any more seriously than that. Jeez, some people have way too much time on their hands.

LOL, precisely.

I just love all this indignant bullshit from people who haven't even seen the film.
:D

I have, and I can tell you categorically that the main female character is a stronger role than most of the men, so none of that sexism bollocks going on.

And the director himself actually compared the hunchback to George Bush, who he has stated he dislikes, so unlikely to be a mouthpiece of pro-US propaganda then.

Full Q&A session for those looking for insight and not hysterical Wiki bollocks .

:)

Note he says that the Persians mainly have American accents, and the Spartans have British accents.

Possibly the closest thing Urban's had to a Brass Eye paedogeddon response.

The whole thread is bollocks - Frank Miller has said repeatedly at interviews that the whole point was to create a mythology from the real events in the comic book and to transfer that feeling of 'factasy' into the fillm, hence the hyper stylised looks etc.

Precisely.

Anyway, I'm defending it whatever.
It's made $70million in the US, and I'm off to the premiere tonight having worked on some of the UK publicity for it.

He's not here, but wotaclassic. No seppoes in 400 BC?

No non indigenous seppoes in 400BC- You might mean -

And in anycase when did historical inaccuracy put the Yanks off a good self-congratulatory yarn? Just surprised they missed the opportunity. Perhaps they could have got it in that it was a time travelling good-ole-boy who went back and cracked the Persians enigma machine code?

Ah sorry, it's an ART film. As you were.

saw it last night...tis teh kewl_kewl_kewl_kewl.

if you wanna go find Propaganda in filums...go look at Ghost Rider....now that reeeeeeeeeks!!!! :D

Nah, it's from a Frank Miller comic so no heemasexing going on (seriously, cna you imagine that going down well with his fan base of 15 or mental age of 15 year old boys who lurve a bit of fantasy ultraviolence), altho I would suspect it's alluded to...altho apparently all the CGId 6 packs and muscles 'are definitely not camp'...

The Spartans were as well man - everyone fights, noone quits, and you only stick it in a girl to make a new Spartan.

Indeed; looking at the cast list almost all the main parts are played by British actors.

Yep, they're definitely going for the historical angle here, not clearly styalised or at all... :D

Links? ..... :D joke!1

the fact that EVERYONE goes through some stage of homosexuality in their lives was deliberately lost by the Bourgeoisie...but I guess not everyone knows that. ;)

The Athenians just about made it law tho' innit? :D

that was what turned me off Sin City, it was just horrible.

Actually, one of the things I liked about the film was the kick-ass prostitutes. The group of young men I saw it with walked away shaking their heads and saying "Man, you do not want to fuck with those prostitutes!" :D

It is at this point I would normally provide you all with a picture of Lena Headey, who looks wonderful in this film, but I did that on the other 300 thread so I won't.

:)
