3 months in South America - Quito to Santiago

chan chan is boring. huaca de la luna, nearby, 700 years older and much better preserved, kicks its ass
Did both, loved both, sorry you didn't like Chan Chan but if we all liked the same thing life would be boring.hope you love Nazca,do the flight but don't have breakfast.

Been a bit shit with photos recently. Difficult finding a good enough net connection! Found one today, so here's some pics.

First, the pre-inca ruins around Trujillo

Walls at Chan Chan. Big, impressive, brown.

Walls at Huaca de la Luna. Big, impressive, coloured. Older.

We went to Lima after that, just for one day, but the camera packed up so there are no photos. You're not missing much IMO. We got out of Lima sharpish on Friday morning...

...on the Ferrocarril Central Andino, 2nd highest railway in the world and utterly spectacular.

This is the highest passenger station in the world, at 4780m. I felt all faint and giddy, but chewing coca leaves helped

Lima's certainly not the prettiest city in the world but the museum of the Peruvian Inquisition is worth a look. Incidentally, I saw my first dead body near there - a person who had been shot in the street by the police. This is going to sound callous but it seemed quite fitting to stumble across a bunch of people crowding around someone who had just been killed by the state after walking out of a museum about state terror.

e2a: If you're fond of train journeys, the most impressive one I took in that region was, IIRC, into Uyuni from the North. If you get the train at the right time, you get to see the sun setting on the salt flats to the West of the train. And then if those saltflats are flooded they form a huge mirror for the sun to set into. It's quite a sight.

AH that looks amazing you lucky bastard.

How's your Spanish doing?

A Chilean dude I met in Nepal used to ramble at me about the necessity of visiting "the Bolivia man" so i have taken that to heart. You heading that way...?

Bolivia's our next country, after Arequipa, Cusco & the inca trail. Should be there by December.

We've been on a boat trip, sandboarding, relaxing and flying over the nazca lines.

This is Huacachina. Unabashed gringo hangout around an oasis surrounded by huge dunes.

A relaxing sealion on one of the Islas Ballestas.

Sliding down slopes like that one in the background is quite a rush. No point in standing up, you only fall over.

Some Nazca Lines. The plane ride was fun, although one of the passengers did throw up. I got to sit in the copilot's seat, but there were no duplicate controls :(

*more envy

Your new camera is certainly delivering the goods too.

It's absolutely pissing it down in London at the moment in case you're interested.

Just clicked on this post & will be keeping tabs on it as I'm currently in Buenos Aires (actually right now I'm in Puerto Iguazu having been at the magnificent Falls all day today - Wow!) and will be making my way up to Peru via Chile & Boliva over the next couple of months (Inca Trail over Christmas :) ) - So tips on places to stay etc greatly appreciated :)

Some very nice pictures too :)

More pictures of steak please.
Steeeeeeeeaaaaaaaaaaaaak. :p

You know, I was a pescatarian (and one that ate fish minimally) till 6 weeks before this trip. Now I've eaten alpaca steak, and get general steak cravings once a week. Plan was to revert to original diet when I got back; not sure that's going to happen now :(

We'll be in Santiago over Xmas before we go home, after going through Bolivia. We should stay in touch, as definite possibility we could cross paths along the way. Would be cool to bump into a random urb! And definitely can offer advice re: where we've been :)

God these pics take me back.

Huacachina was a nice break,no-one told me not to put sun block on before sandboarding,I ended up covered in sand and looked like a sand monster. did you see the sun go down over the dunes,it's amazing.
Sealions are great aren't they,I think that may be the same one I saw,we sailed so close that we could smell its breath(very fishy).
We had someone being sick on our plane trip, which is why I said don't have breakfast.did you go and see the mummies in the desert?

Awrr Sparrow looks soooo happy there!:D (and you look so different to when I last saw you Crispy!)

I am also very green, :o looks like you're having such an amazing time. Beautiful :)

Looks amazing. Glad you are having a fantastic time. Sparrow, don't worry about the meat eating, it happens to the best of us. :D

Think about it when you come back hon, just enjoy your time out there for now - looks amazing from the pics!

What was alpaca like?

:D ha ha ha... and that's like?

For some reason I'm leaning towards more of a venison taste that lamb or beef - even though they look like sheep on stilts.

Yeah, according to Crispy it tastes like venison. Given I'm not all that used to red meat, and I've never eaten venison, I have to take his word for it!

It tasted of nom. :)

And yes, I probably do look ridiculously happy in most photos. This is a lot better than being at uni studying! :D

It's a darkish meat that can be a bit chewy but is full of flavour (had it a few times now and it's been bland only once)

Zenie - you're seeing a $10 Walmart haircut dunked in sand and windblasted. It's the hot new look.

Here's some more pics

4109480446_3922083793.jpg

Alpaca and sandwich in foreground, sparrow to the left, Arequipa in the background. Crispy, not in shot, is wearing a big woolly poncho that the waiter brought out at sunset.

Courtyard in the Santa Catalina Convent. The whole place seemed contrived to arrange charming scenes like this.

Colca Canyon. That little patch of green is at 2200m, the photo is taken from 3300m. We went down there and back up in a day. While the sun was setting, we got lost in terraced farmland and nearly had to find our way back with a torch, but a lone woman shouted and pointed and we made it home ok. For a big panorama of the canyon, click here.

There is a condor in the middle of this photo. Now, more that ever, I wish we had a 200mm lens.

Inca trail next.

Lovely pics Crispy & Sparrer. I think I can just about see a condor, if I'm right and just in case anyone else can't:

You got your hair cut at Walmart? :D

Left it till too late didn't I :o
I figure I'm already going to stand out as a rich white backpacker so the haircut doesn't really matter.
In the departure lounge for our bus now. Departure lounge. This is fucking swish. National Express has a lot to learn.

ph, your prize is in the post
