27" iMacs released...

FWIW I've had great success buying second hand macs from ebay. Unless your old man's a power user, the last generation should meet his needs and give him a new toy to sample without the financial pressure.

My old man got a 1.5G4 Powerbook for £220 which is working just dandy a year or more later, the better half got a similar ibook for just over £130 yesterday. Unbelievable condition and she's over the moon with the surprising speed of the thing in everyday use.

Of course, your old man may be lusting after that big screen and sheer flash newness, in which case feel free to ignore this in the haste to get his chequebook out. They're expensive, but they're undeniably lovely machines

Gizmodo are still advising people not to buy the iMacs until the problems are sorted:

In this week's iMac update, we talk to an Apple Authorized Service Provider/Reseller from the UK. And what does he tell us? Apple is so short on 27-inch displays that they're paying customers 15% to simply return faulty iMacs.

Can You Safely Buy a New iMac Yet?

Nope.

Why?
The yellow screens have yet to be fixed. The flickering screens have just been addressed with a second firmware update, but we can't tell whether or not this update fixed the problem. (Write [email protected] to let us know your experience).
What's Being Done?

27-inch iMacs are still being delayed in what is allegedly a complete halting of their assembly line, though Apple has denied it. The three-week delay of last week has been shifted to a two-week delay (but such is to be expected, as we're a week later in whatever fix Apple appears to be working on). Of course, if Apple's screen issues are in any way related to believed supplier LG's production methods, these delays might not help. LG-sourced Dell displays are having color issues, too.

If Windows 7 doesn't fix my shitty Vista computer, I may be tempted by one of these (if they fix the issues, natch)

"never buy v1 of an apple product"

27" is just insane though. I thought the 24" was too big! Mine's 20" and it's more than enough.

You're talking to a 2 x 24" monitors guy here and even then things can get cramped.

Mind you, I have about a zillion windows and programs open at the same time.

Apple offers hush money for dodgy iMacs

I like how apple fixes these problems

Better tell my friend, she doesn't have any problems that I know of, but I'm sure we can find some so she can get an upgrade. :D

I might get a 27 with my bonus this year. Have fallen for the curse and want something that looks nice in my bedroom.

TBF, version one of most products have problems, don't they?

How much is that monitor anyway? It says iMac from £969, but I can't see a price for just the monitor. Not that this is any more than a pipe dream for me anyway (I'm not that keen on Macs in general but do love the monitors).
