2021/22 season

Is there a game next Saturday?

Someone at Carshalton said we’re we’re playing Tottenham U23 at home but there’s nothing on the website nor in Pompeydunc’s calendar. Maybe I imagined the whole thing…
This is the first I've heard about it. I was on announcing duties on Thursday and no one asked me to mention any additional fixtures, although in the event I was silenced by technical problems which apparently made me sound like a dalek!

Logically you'd think we'd be looking to fill the three remaining Saturdays before the opening league game with fixtures. As it stands we just have the home games with Palace and Bromley on the next two Tuesdays, followed by a visit to VCD Athletic on Thursday week.

I'll chase this up on Tuesday if there's been no official update from the club before then. I can't believe we're not going to add any more fixtures although we may be struggling to find attractive opposition for the Saturday dates at this late stage. I'm impatient for some Saturday football myself but I'm not interested in other clubs' friendlies with all the trialists and multiple substitutions.

You didn't imagine the Tottenham fixture. Apparently it was pencilled in at one time but following the restructuring of their coaching team Tottenham chose to cancel the game.

Our officials are still working on arranging suitable further pre-season matches.

The Bromley home game, postponed from Tuesday, has now been rescheduled for next Tuesday, 3 August. This doesn't appear to have been added to the club website yet but the chairman mentioned it in an email to season ticket holders and tickets are on sale, although you can also pay on the gate by card. Any season ticket holders who aren't receiving club emails might need to check their spam folder, which is where mine keep ending up along with those trying to sell me bitcoins and viagra.

Any of you experts want to predict where we will finish in the league this season? I have no idea if we have a strong team, compared to the rest, whether we will finish mid-table or if we are going to be fighting relegation?

We've kept the core of last season's team, which seemed to be improving after a poor start, and added some decent experienced players.

A lot depends upon whether other teams are going to be stronger or weaker than before, but I'm sure we'll have enough to stay well clear of danger. Dorking and Dartford seem likeliest to be chasing the top places. I'm not yet sure whether anyone has been seriously damaged by the pandemic.

One bookie at least strongly agrees with you.

That list seems to be largely based on the league placings from the 12-15 games played by clubs last season. I'm not sure the likes of Oxford, Eastbourne, Hungerford and Hemel, all of whom benefited from Jack Pearce's funding fiasco, will sustain a challenge over a full season.

Dorking had moved into pole position and are clearly well funded. Steve King at Dartford is very consistent in achieving top five finishes and the club probably has one of the stronger infrastructures in the division. Havant ought to be there or thereabouts, although I'm beginning to think manager Paul Doswell may be a busted flush after dropping down a level two years ago following a decade of sustained success in taking Sutton United from Isthmian League to National Division.

Billericay, who are owned by a consortium of 4 or 5 wealthy individuals and have an above par budget, should probably be a fair bit higher on that list. Gary McCann seems to be doing a good job at Hampton now he's established there, I fancy them for a top five place.

It was very surprising to see the likes of St. Albans, Hemel and Hungerford up there last year. Eastbourne did sign Chris Whelpdale who is a quality playmaker. Can't disagree with Dartford etc being up there. Havant play a horrible brand of football.

We had a decent side by the time of lockdown and Gavin wasn't messing with the team too much. I haven't got too excited by preseason as how many will still be here come October? But there are some good players in the Hamlet set up just now.

Our final pre-season match will be at Merstham next Friday evening, 6th August. I havent noticed it mentioned on the Hamlet's social media but I was told yesterday by the chairman that it's "as definite as a pre-season game can be"!
