2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics Thread

There were people downtown, way more than usual, but not the crowds from two weeks ago.

A relative said a week ago or so, 'we're worried about you guys, now that the olympics are over'. I said, not to worry, it was really good, we have to think about that etc etc.

You know, I think there's a bit of a come-down. A bit of depression even. Something really good and out of the ordinary happens, and then you go back to the normal routine. The normal routine doesn't quite compare.

I think we all want these Paralympics to recreate it, and I think in our quest, we'll attend the games like they've never been attended before. Which is good. It was good to see some guy in a wheelchair from Argentina enter the stadium, and 60,000 people are cheering at the top of their voices. What that must feel like. All the events are selling out now.

I guess nothing has changed no-how: if you get a high, you're going to get a low. I'd be interested to hear what Shreddy says, although I think he's gone back to his film job, and that keeps you busy 14 hours a day, seven days a week when it's on.

I have to say Canada really does know how to put on these big sporting events. Last time the Commonwealth Games was there it was excellent. The under 20 world cup a couple of years back was nigh on perfect. And that was a pretty damn fine Winter Olympics.

So Canada for the next available World Cup, and Vancouver for the next available Summer Olympics.

That would be cool.

Strange - I've sworn off of urban for a while, but just came back to check on posts on the first page.

I got to thinking about urban while I read about combining the para-Olympics (or what ever) and hoped that this thread would have continued with these events.

I just finished watching to opening ceremonies.....

I was thinking that this thread may have touched on the issue of combined the two Olympics, again - WRONG!!!

In keeping with the tone of this thread,

Well done Vancouver. I was talking to customer service agent from Vancouver. I could almost hear him blush when I congratulated him on the Olympics.

He echoed what has been said here by our Vancouverites, Glad he was there to be a part of it - it will never happen again in his lifetime.

Saw a news clip about the British Paralympic Ski Team. It's the largest ever sent by Britain. One of the guys is Tim Farr. He broke his back in a skiing accident in 2004, and now he's here, competing.

At the end of the final hockey game, the Canada US gold medal game, where we prevailed in overtime to take it all, the hockey stick and gloves of Sidney Crosby, the goal scorer, went missing. As it turns out, the puck also went missing.

Not a big deal, you say? Like fuck it isn't!

The RCMP investigation division was put on the job. All items are now recovered. The moral of the story is, don't fuck with us when it comes to hockey.

The stick was intercepted on its way to Russia.

The glove was in Pittsburgh.

The puck was in Finland.

Final standings at the Paralympics: Russia 38 medals, Germany 24, Canada tied with Ukraine with 19. US 13 medals. I don't think Britain got any.

You have to wonder about countries like the US. Big populations, do really well at summer and winter olympics, as you'd expect for a big rich country.

But at the paralympics, they come in way down in the medal count. Lots of money for training if you're an able-bodied athlete, though.
