Bum city– I haven’t even voted on this bit yet. Well, I guess I can do it now, now that it makes no difference whatsoever… I’ve written a wee line or two about each song, too
Dirty disco– nice bit of rapping. I especially like the bits where the rap goes into falsetto singing– reminds me a bit of Beck or Outkast… very good
8 years– reminds of the Human league– in a good way. Or depeche mode. Really like the ‘twisty’ guitar riff. Excellent stuff.
Shiva dub– nice unsettling riff. I like all the different sounds that come in and out
Minty fresh– like this a lot. Good ending. Very professional all through. It’s a real grower.
Deconstructing– another grower. The chord sequence reminds me a little of Maps, and the riffing is pure Floyd.
‘Push it as far as you can’– superb. Guitar line reminds me a bit of ‘theme from sparta f.c.’ by the Fall. Like the Hunter S Thompson sample, and the way the vocals interlap at one point…
Spiral 2– love the build-up to this. Wish there’d been a bit more tune in the main section.
Gerry Echoplex– fantastic. Love the sample of Gerald Ford saying, ‘Richard Nixon’– amuses me a lot for some reason. Incidentally, have you heard ‘music is shit’ by the new fads? It’s not an accusation of plagiarism by any means, but if you haven’t, you might be amused by how much the playout groove sounds like a short section of your song… (from 4.26)
Free-form– I don’t like the effects on the guitar (quibble), but I think it’s a great song. I’d love to hear an acoustic version.
The theme– classic! Like King Kurt and Gogol Bordello getting together and having a hoe-down on Dick Dale’s expense account. Well, that comment makes sense to me, anyway…
Tripping song– like this a lot– jingle-jangle pop! I can imagine this an outro to a Beatles song– ‘hey jude’-style.
Jigsaw face– like an angry bat trapped in a wind-tunnel.
Took me ages to work out who to vote for– it was between two… congratulations Gerry Echoplex!
