2007 Tour de France to start in LONDON!!!

scrub that, it'll be July the 7th.

route announced on feb the 9th. Expect The Mall to figure prominently as either the Depart or Arrivee.

I'm not a massive cycling fan,but used to watch the Milk Race every year when a kid,and as a welshman follow the fortunes of Nicole cooke. Didnt the tour vist a few years back?cos i seem to remember a south coast sytage when they let Sean yates(?) cycle ahead of the field to stop in his home town for a bit before they caught him up!

early nineties. and it did visit in the UK once before that. 1973, I believe.

This is fucking awesome news. I'll be there on both days if I can, hopefully to see Bradley Wiggins take the prologue on home soil. Did Boardman win the prologue when the TdF last came in the 90s? I was a bit young and hence didn't see it go through my home town of Basingstoke.

Cheers for that info Sigmund, not that likely that we'll be away at any Festivals around the 7th July either ... :)

Could be shortly after England's World Cup victory .... ahem .... ;)

Ah, one of the Tour traditions that makes it so great. It's just a real shame the sport seems to be riddled with drugs :(

Tour de Bermondsey!

according to the Southwark News today as an exclusive (route to be formally unveiled today), the 2nd stage is due to cross Tower Bridge (a rather obvious choice, IMO) "before turning to cross Tooley St and Jamaica Road, going round the Rotherhithe roundabout and zooming down Lower Road" on its way to Kent.

so nothing for the Lambeth boys, then :p

:)

This sounds great but I do find it ironic that in a country where cycling and cyclists are looked upon with contempt by the general public - particularly motorists - that the Tour de France should start here.

I can't see white van man taking too kindly to loads of cyclists swarming around London. Those fuckers are likely to ram cyclists wherever they see them.

I hope so! Then one has to worry about those eejits in 4x4s. ;)

I'd like to think that cycling provision would improve in this country as a result...but it won't. :(

Early leaks suggest: stage 1 - Embankment, over Tower Bridge, through Southwark, down to Deptford, through Greenwich, towards Plumstead, through some bits of Bexley, down to Dartford, then onto Canterbury and to finish at Ashford.

bit sketchy if its an Ashford or Canterbury finish atm.

people of SE London - prepare for some major resurfacing work:)

Sounds great, going to be a real challenge for those cyclists when get into the Congestion Charge area.

I can't find the link I had - I know it goes up Highgate west Hill on every lap though. I'll post it up when I find it again.

I agree - a tour of the south london alps (Mont Palais de Crystal, La Col de Gypsy and Alpe d'Anerly) would have sorted the men from the boys.

sigmund to run British Cycling, I say!

and the arrivee at the World Famous Elephant & Castle

actually, a Tour of London would be a great event.

Oh I agree - you'd have to have a Surrey hills section though for Les Montagnes - theres more hills in Surrey than the peak district apparently. Plus some cobbled sections taking in some great east London backstreets.

More route news!

More details from the TFL press release:

Incredible - the tour is going through my home town, Maidstone...never thought I'd see the day

Tunbridge Wells eh

So is there a step by step guide to every tiny village they'll be passing through. And is it exclusively Kent they'll be passing through or is it that usual thing of anywhere south of London is Kent conveniently missing out East and West Sussex?
