200 children kidnapped in Nigeria to be sold.

What enough to furnish themselves with APC's as in that pic in the graun?

Old Russian kit cheap as chips and probably stolen from somebodies army anyway.

Mercenaries are not needed afganistian is winding down and the western military could do with some other Muslims to kill ,and , as long they don't overstay their welcome could be the falklands factor for Cameron.

Thought I'd read that several of the mothers were invited to meet with the First Lady. Instead they sent a representative, who was then detained (apparently on the order of the First Lady, who felt slighted).

Priorities in a crisis

I'm not surprised that the official Nigerian govt reaction has appeared to be indifference. Lagos has been quietly shitting itself for years that the religious divide will build into a civil war, so treating incidents like this as though they're one-off acts by the "lunatic fringe" allows them to sustain the illusion that Nigeria isn't sliding towards division.

I'm surprised at the low post count in this thread....
Such a horrible event perpetrated by radicals who have a view of women and girls that is so antiquated and utterly alien to us in the west.
Where are the feminists?
Where are the political activists?
Where are the anti racists?
Where is everyone?
Or do we only concern ourselves with our own problems on our own patch?
I used to think the world was getting smaller...but really we are just pulling further and further away from the third world...
Very sad.....:( :( :(

I don't want anyone to take this personally so please don't.

Like most / many I think the story is pretty awful, but I don't know enough about the region or politics or whatever to make a valuable comment.

I do wonder what the Americans have that they feel can help the investigation. Hopefully they do actually have something to bring to the table.

They don't look like very good soldiers to me. They've not been keeping up with their Modern Warfare 5 methinks.

It's not so much about what China isn't doing regarding jihadists and military bases in Africa (interested in anything you can find to show I'm wrong on that) more the big fat obvious of what the US is attempting to do in Africa around jihadists, and military bases.

I've never heard anything suggesting that China has any interest in the internal politics of African states, with regard to jihadists or anything else. In fact, their official policy of African engagement is to keep well out of local political issues.

Prob been mentioned but...
We will be at the Nigerian high commission london from 10 am tomorrow to keep raising the profile of those stolen girls...

What about the thousands slaughtered by the Nigerian Government?

This is a distraction.

Islam has been in Nigeria from the 10th century in areas of Hausaland in the north. They had the Sokoto Caliphate which ruled for a time. There is Queen Amina of Zazzau who was a Muslim ruler in the 16th century. Islam is not new to Nigeria yet it seems to have been hijacked by people who have their own interpretation.

For the moment, I reserve my judgement. I am wary about the US wanting to get more deeply involved in Africa to stop the Chinese influence. Even Israel - when it's not trying to throw black people out - has been offering help to Nigeria, with their specific 'expertise' in the last couple of years.

Expertise being flogging them arms.

I know islam is not new to Nigeria. All this jihadi stuff is though, and it's not just Nigeria, even in places like Khazakstan apparently, previously tolerant ways of islam are being turned into something intolerant. It's wahabi/salafis etc. I personally consider thse jihadst nuts as close allies of the US, sometimes explicitly....sometimes just by how useful their presence in an area is to the US military-industrial-congress, an ideal weapon to attack societies with large muslim populations etc.

Divide and conquer, as the legend goes.

This morning Vanessa on her radio show asked what would happen if 300 girls were kidnapped from Roedean

This is why I reserve my judgement for the moment. A lot of things may not be what they seem.

Not sure if this has been posted, but before going on a crusade... read this, excellent article: http://www.compareafrique.com/dear-...might-actually-making-things-worse/?wpmp_tp=1

Thanks for posting this. Lets not forget the Evil Entity known as the Nigerian state itself, the whole thing is owned and operated by Shell Oil anyway. Theres an area called Rivers State, a delta region in the south east where the people have been fighting the company and the tremendous toll taken on the environment by a pet goverment and corporate contempt for years.
