2 week India trip advice

Two weeks doesn't sound long

I would definitely pick one small area and focus on that. Every place I went to in India I wanted to hang around in forever :D

(Except the big cities)
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ This.

Hi Eva, two weeks will pass quick enough so I'd advise having a clear-ish plan.

You can get to lots of places from Delhi but i'd reccommend Rajastan as other posters have. It's a special place.

Manali is quite far and a big journey to make with only 2 weeks to spare.

Have a great time whatever though.:)

*jealous*

Was in india in Feb, nearly 5 weeks, started and finished in Delhi. Don't know what your budget is but can recommend a really good place in Pahar Ganj - Main bazar and backpackers area - so although a culture shock lots of other tourists and backpackers about. It's clean (which is unusual!) and although I didn't need it in Feb/March it has aircon. pm me if you want any more info. :) Also have lots of info on Rajisthan as we did 2wks travelling round.

1. Go for longer than 2 weeks.
2. Just wear flip flops, it's only a bit of a rain (I've been in Delhi then actually..it's more like short bursts of very heavy rain, but it's not like you're going to be stuck out in the middle of nowhere in two weeks, so I wouldn't panic - and you can get almost everything you might discover you need very easily in Delhi anyway).
3. I'd be more worried about the journey up to Manali then (although still not that worried :D ) but if you're only there for two weeks you're probably flying anyway.

Oh 4. August is a lovely time to be in Manali - low tourist season, so relatively quiet  but the climate's still lovely - perfect. :)
5. Stay at one of the places up the hill from the clubhouse....to the right over the bridge toward the old town. Lovely and peacefull with great views.

I have great recommendations for places in Jaipur and Pushkar, if you are going there....I've sent many people there and no-one ever had bad experiences.

Let me know. :)

I did something similar in 2001.

My advice would be get out of Dehli as soon as you can. Do the sightseeing there at the end of your trip once you've acclimatised to the country.

This is pretty sound advice. I was going to say something similar. Delhi definitely deserves at least a couple of days out of your 2 weeks but it can be overwhelming at first. I went back there after 4 weeks touring around manali rajasthan and varannassi and found it a really enjoyable place to be.

If you find yourself in Connaught place, hot and and being endlessly hassled by people, just duck into one of several air conditioned bars around the inner circle.

It's like stepping out of one world and into another.

This is all excellent, many many thanks.

This is what I have done so far -

Booked one night in a good backpackers in Dehli, and an airport pickup.
Going to book an overnight train to Manali today.
Was going to fly from Heathrow to Delhi in walking boots, and then maybe do some hiking in the mountains - what do people think?
From there will research some of these places people have said about.
Def want to go to the Taj.
Might also want to go into the desert.
Will change my 2 night res in Delhi to just one.
I prefer veggie food overall so I think I'll be cool.

Two weeks isnt long I know. Its work you see, we cant take more than that off.
Its so exciting doing all this planning! I'll be going in two months!

Hi, the hotel's just advused me to change my money with them, for a better rate of exchange. As expected! But - where would you suggest I change it? Airport? A mixture? I'll have to do a mix I guess anyway since I wont change it all at once....

Exchange most of it before you leave home....you'll get the best rate.

I dont know why Im worrying actually, I will get some higher some lower ex rates to be sure, and whats the difference really. So what if someone gets a bit more for my trouble.

use a major credit card...you'll get the exchange rate in effect when the transaction took place :)

this assumes you stick around the major cities

Don't worry about changing money...you can do it at the airport or with your hotel...exchanges rates there are pretty similar. When you are changing money some places ask for your passport to check and take your passport number and afters will give you an encashment certificate. Hold onto this..or at least one of them if you change money more than once as you will need it if you wish to exchange any leftover rupees.

Visit Taj Mahal if you can. It can be done as a day trip from Delhi on the express train...so perhaps could do it at the end of your 2 weeks? Whatever you choose to do you will have a wonderful time. It's a wonderfully diverse country with so much to offer. I have been 3 times but never up North so I'm quite envious.

Visit Taj Mahal if you can.
oh yeah, that's real original...and it hasn't already been mentioned at least 7 or 8 times by others :)

that's like telling potential visitors to London to go see Buckingham Palace and the London Bridge

Not quite to sure what your point is here with the . I'm very much aware that is not an original suggestion as I have posted on this thread and read all of it...even your nonsense. I'm simply saying to visit if she can. 2 weeks is a short time and she will be nowhere the Taj if she stays Manali way...I was offering advice that it could be done as a daytrip at the end of her hoilday...

Visas for India in London: new regime-any experiences?

OK so the embassy has farmed this out to two outside offices as of end of May. At least the old system of coffee and chats at 5 in the morning on the Strand was predictable. Anyone had any experiences of in-person visits to the new London offices in Victoria or near Old Street? Predictably, their phone line is down and they don't answer emails, so the old standards are being maintained.

The Taj is amazing though. It doesn't matter how cliched it is or whatever, when you actually see it, it's amongst the few 'famous sights' I've seen which have really lived up to the expectation.

Innit, the single most beautiful building I've ever seen, just perfect.

Really? I have to confess I thought 'I was kind of expecting that to be bigger'

Innit. It is pretty impressive when the sun's on it, though.
My appreciation was marred by a bout of amoebic dyssentry picked up on my second day in India.
I barfed on the bench where Princess Di sat all alone.:o
