Anyone see the Beat at around 2 am in the morning, at Lost Vagueness, Glasto, 2004, Sunday night/Monday morning?

FANTASTIC!!! climax to a wonderful Glastonbury ...

Also, they were top at Beautiful Days this August (2005) as well .. I think you were there for that gig Mr Steev ... ;)

I was there at both :)

So was I at the time, but ahem possibly slightly different drugs ... ;)

Well yeah. But then I was still walking when I saw you leaning on a post staring into space about three hours later, so I wasn't the worst. :D

i saw the beat at the big chill this summer and they were great, i dont think i would have gone to see many other bands, not matter wat i was on. Lets think, erm, i think it was an afternoon of cider, then a pill and bit more cider (country boy cocktail).

I saw the Dub Pistols afterwards featuring Terry Hall singing a specials song i no very well, but for the life of me cant remember. Was kinda drun'n'bass beat, u would have liked it MOnkey Grinder, and speeded up version of, wait, gangsters it think, was like skaning to ska-core, that kinda speed, the rest of the set wasnt to my liking, but the should check them out bud if u haven't already, i think you'd like them.

I think I have some old Dub Pistols somewhere, very big beaty stuff, seven or eight years old I think. I'll look out for the newer stuff though, sounds like it might be a bit different.

Went to the 3 Men & Black gig last night in Cardiff Glee Club and a nice chilled affair it was too. Roddy Radiation and Pauline Black have hardly changed but Jake Burns looks even more like a geography teacher now. I didn’t realise PB had such a good voice. They played a mixture of each other’s songs (see below) plus some new ones (and old covers). You could get tickets for a fiver from the Glee Club website yesterday so the same might apply for the gig in Birmingham tonight. Try www.glee.co.uk

Ah this is soooo not fair I just cant pin it down to one fav.

Then mirror in the bathroom popped in me head and the choice was made

It has to be the specials - not only for the first album (on which every sinlge track if fucking mint) and the greatest no.1 single ever (ghost town) but also beause Jerry Dammers set up the whole 2-tone label and everything that went with it. The UK ska explosion would not have happend without him.

Having said that all the other bands did excellent stuff - including Madness who were definitely very much a ska band in their early days.

2-tone was a genunie fusion of musical styles - the uplifting skank and dance energy of ska meeting punks sharp urgency and street agression to create something new, fresh and vital that was also overtly polictical and multi racial at a time when nazi skins were regularly marching through the countries highsteets. It also gave teenage boys music they could happily dance and dance and dance to.

Im in a ska punk band and we're proud to have supproted bad manners selector and neville staples from the specials. Selector were a bit dissappointing - Pauline is good but her band are pretty tame session musos. Bad Manners and Neville's Specials were ace. We were sposed to support the Beat this thursday but its been cancelled ( :( ).

Not seen the Beat but by all accounts they are excellent - I missed them at lost vaguness but it was several of me mates highlight of the festival.

(BTW - will of w, did you ever get that CD?)

Kakadabu (apparently a missheard aproxomation of the Italian for 'bullshit' - coined before I joined).

Occasional gigs in leeds and surrounding area. Punky ska and dub - our own stuff plus crowd pleasing 2-tone classics. We're good at it - even though I say it myself.

(notices mtbskalovers name) Pm me your address and Ill send you a dodgey demo if you like.

If any old two tone fans fancy a trip down memory lane and are not above a bit of p2p filesharing I have just noticed that the dance craze video is available for download on emule-

filesize is 802mb so broadband is essential to enjoy a rare chance at getting the digital version (dance craze has never had an official dvd release but bootlegs show up on ebay from time to time).

Incidentally the bodysnatchers track 007 has never been released in any other format. They did record other tracks for a BBC session but these sadly are unreleased as yet, but some were later re recorded by the Belle Stars.

Another rarity I managed to track down on P2P is Away by the Swinging Cats, b side of the Mantovani single that has appeared on a number of compilations.

edited to add:
some of the individual song videos from dance craze are also being shared at present on p2p and these weigh in at 20mb-40mb each depending on track.

You forgot the "National Front and Natty Dreads" bit!

The beat just shade the specials for me, I would argue more consistent if not quite as edgy or innovative.

As a sometime DJ Twist and Crawl is still in the box and always gets people going (and was reinterpreted by someone recently if memory serves - death in vegas?) Glad to here the beat still rocking on recent live outings but can you really call it the beat without Dave Wakelin and Andy cox? Does anyone know the politics of how rankin roger ended up with 'the beat' name. From what I see on dave Ws website he would love to do some more gigs but RR not having it.

Selecter for me, saw them supporting The Specials along with Madness in a triple header once and The Selecter just shaded it then , so .........

Something like that ? It's been a while , but I've still got the ticket stub, one of the best gigs I ever went to. It was at Stoke's Victoria Hall.

I was massive into 2-tone in the early 80s but a bit too young to go to gigs, I never got to see any of the 2-tone bands with the original line ups, though I have managed to see the selecter once, the specials twice (around the time of todays specials) and bad manners twice.

I have never seen Madness live, couldnt afford to go to Madstock.

Madness are still worth going to see if you get the chance. I last saw them 2 years ago. They are doing a few Xmas shows this year. They did the Dangermen gigs earlier in the year. I first saw them in Glastonbury in 86 after Barso had left. The first Madstock in Finsbury (early 90s) was bloody brilliant.
