16 y/o girl sacked for saying work was boring on FB

fuckssake a 16 year old called her work a bit boring. To sack her for shows what a fucking twat her boss is. If one of my staff posted that on their facebook, I'd swap some tasks round between them. (i am a manager, in an really evil company).

well serves them right if they're not going to restrict who's viewing what they stick on it then
the facebook default is "wide open"; the facebook operation is predicated on web serfs generating content for each other

users have to figure that out, what it means and how to change it -- and this in the face of a strong site culture to "share".

facebook is a bitch; don't let 'em off the hook

Also to add, facebook is a personal thing. If I saw one of my team in the pub getting pissed on a saturday it's their business. If they want to write on their facebook they were pissed. Fine. I can make that distinction.
Too many employers think they have to own and control every aspect of their employees lives (eg, drug testing in the Uk and US). Of course some roles do require a certain level of trustworthiness and professionalism, I doubt the girl in question was employed as such.

Her boss owned her body and soul, no freedom today ?Who said that slavery was dead????? I would torch the place if it happen to me. work to live and pay the bills, most people dont' like they jobs.

You do know a company can get rid of you for whatever reason they want (apart form discrimination or various other ethical laws) whenever they want, regardless of your contract until you have a years service??

Pretty sure your contract is fair and such with regard to notice periods, pay and reward and such... but.. if they wanted to get shot of you within a year, it's worth jack shit apart from honouring your notice periods.

I'l clarify with the HR g/f tomorrow, pretty damn sure though cos she is in this position atm... etc

You don't need a year's service to bring a breach of contract claim in the ET ... and some employers' disciplinary procedures are contractual :D (These probably weren't though, but it would be worth the girl checking).

Poor lass, it does seem a bit harsh.

Do you think in the future people will start making themselves look like total angels on FB in the hope that their employer 'accidentally' reads it?

People do that now - a "real name" facebook with lots of family stuff, and a "fake name" facebook with all the pics of them vomiting on cats and so on.

I hadn't thought to do that, I just made sure that my complete name wasn't my profile and locked everything down.

(not that I go out and vomit on cats)

I thought it was bashed into childrens' heads that they shouldn't give information out about themselves

It was bashed into my neice's. She, however, in her 16 y-o wisdom didn't see the problem in posting pictures of herself & her younger three siblings complete with home & school addresses, post codes and surnames.

Until my sister found out, and err... 'pointed out' the error of her ways.

Apparently she thought she'd been 'careful'...

and I thought 16-year-olds were meant to be really intelligent these days :D

The only thing worse than paid employment is the obligation to pretend you have some motivation for doing it other than not wanting to starve to death.

I think I'm in love. :)

She was naive. Paid the price. Im sure she wont do that again in a hurry!

16 year old girl sacked for saying "My job is boring" on Facebook

Bunch of fucking idiots. I was going to tell them what I thought, but looks like they had some other people saying the same so they removed their contact page.........

What a woeful example of poor 'management'.

A 16-year-old girl from Essex was fired after she described her office job as "boring" on her Facebook page.

Kimberley Swann, 16, of Clacton, had been working at Ivell Marketing & Logistics, in Clacton, for three weeks before being fired on Monday.

"I think they've stooped quite low," she said.

The firm's Steve Ivell said of the decision: "Her display of disrespect and dissatisfaction undermined the relationship and made it untenable."

Miss Swann said: "You shouldn't really be hassled outside work. It was only a throw-away comment.

"I came home from work one day, sat on the computer and said something about my job being boring."

Details were passed to her employers after she allowed colleagues access to her page, Miss Swann said, adding that she was not given the chance to explain.

Her mother, Janette, 41, said: "I think she's been treated totally unfairly. She didn't mention the company's name.

"This is a 16-year-old child we're talking about. She says Clacton is boring but we're not going to throw her out of the house for it."

Mr Ivell said: "Ivell Marketing is a small, close-knit family company and it is very important that all the staff work together in harmony.

"Had Miss Swann put up a poster on the staff notice board making the same comments and invited other staff to read it there would have been the same result."

TUC general secretary Brendan Barber said employers needed "thicker skins" in relation to social networking websites.

He said: "Most employers wouldn't dream of following their staff down the pub to see if they were sounding off about work to their friends."

I am kanda and because I was independent, happy and grateful for my job and not stupid, everyone else should be so at 16.

email that never gets the job done. what we need is a facebook group!

then action will happen.

O hope she claims unfair dissmisal.
