I've been on both ends of this.

I was a twat when I was younger. But I soon realised it was me actually being a twat.

Thing is, here, on Urban, and other places, they say the employer is a cunt by default... I find that stupid and narrow vision.

I don't think any employer is a cunt by default. My boss is probably earning a few poxy grand more than me. He has a boss, who has a boss, who has a boss (and on, in fact), but he is the person most directly in charge of my career and livelyhood. He's hardly the epitome of the modern day slave master but rather another working class person like me, tryna get by. I don't think he is out to get me, but at the same time have no illusions that if I fucked up bad he wouldn't think twice about giving me the boot. But he's not Alan Sugar or anything

A lot of employers are cunts though. I had my share of shit ones, as have a lot of people. And when someone employs someone, they have more than their share of chances to be a dick. In fact, its fair to say they have to work pretty hard not to be. When an employer does something this monumentally petty, its hard not to think "wanker".

I don't think I over emphasised the class aspect and wouldn't wish to dwell on it. But surely employment status is as central to any class-concious debate as money?

You either want to work for someone or you don't. I think after a year you know for a fact. 6 months? squiffy... anyone can just be a cunt and get sacked or force more employment due to rights etc etc...

This is why a lot of Public Sector jobs have a years probation period...

I've seen employers treat people awfully because they know that have no rights and can get away with whatever they want. Most decent employers I've worked for have a given me a full contract within 3 months. If you can't tell if someone is a cunt after 3 months then maybe you shouldn't be a manager.

You do know a company can get rid of you for whatever reason they want (apart form discrimination or various other ethical laws) whenever they want, regardless of your contract until you have a years service??

No I didn't. I'd naively assumed that if it was in my contract it was binding. What's the point in having a contract then?

Pretty sure your contract is fair and such with regard to notice periods, pay and reward and such... but.. if they wanted to get shot of you within a year, it's worth jack shit apart from honouring your notice periods.

I never aimed to be where I am, I lucked into it, by being a bit of a natural geek... If I had ever passed an exam, I'm sure I'd be doing something else that I'd love to do and everyone loved me for doing it
