16 y/o girl sacked for saying work was boring on FB

Well, that's what was wrong. However, I would have thought she'd still be subject to dismissal procedures, and this should have been a first warning, unless she was already under warning.

At one job I was once given a written warning (illegally) for saying something negative about the place, even though, actually, it wasn't negative - it was an answer to someone asking me why I hadn't applied for the manager's job. That meant that, when a colleague asked me 'has this place always been so disorganised?' I couldn't reply at all. Everyone moaned about the place constantly, and not being allowed to criticise it meant I couldn't take place in most of the conversations. If your workers are criticising you, perhaps you shoud consider making changes, rather than telling them to shut up.

She's 16, you get fuck all rights till you're employed for a year.

A lesson learnt that's for sure. Sucks for anyone to lose their job, but she may think who she shares information with in future.

Bear in mind, if she added work people, then she makes a comment like that, it WILL pop on said work persons home page, that isn't snooping. That's her being a fucking div.

She'll be scared enough now not to reveal anything in emails, go on bulletin boards and talk about work... :D

I often wonder who's snooping on me at work :hmm:

Is a home page unrestricted access or do you need permission to view that then?

There's a fuckton of security settings on facebook, that are quite simple to understand.

Bear in mind that peados have been grroming kids for what? 5 years or more on the internet, she should have known this???

/Daily mail mode off

He's talking about the 'news feed' that appears on individuals' own facebook pages. That news feed gives you updates on all your friends, except those where you've said 'tell me less about [so and so],' or they've restricted access for you. You don't have to let everyone see all your updates.

@Kanda: true enough about the one year rule, doh!

since whrn are we not allowed to call boring work boring?

i like my job but there will always be boring bits... like reconfiguring all the computers when we install a new printer... or going round adjusting the software permissions

these things are boring, doesn't mean i hate my job just i find bits of it boring... i don't think i should be fired for telling the truth and neither should she

even so, tons of people I know have "such-and-such is bored at work" on their status from time to time. Even your average boss would have to admit that they get bored at work from time to time, and that having a bitch and a moan about it is good for the soul. OK, you don't say it to your boss, but your boss doesn't spend time searching around a resource that is not even remotely related to your work trying to ensure that you're not subverting his/her workforce...

Online privacy includes our right to freedom of expression on the net (within libal laws, hate-speech laws, etc).

What could they legally sack you for under such circumstances, btw, employment law bods? I guess she must have been on probation being so young, so had no rights, but would this be upheld at a tribunal?

Employment law: She's 16, she has no rights.

If you're 50 and have only worked for a company for 6 months, you have no rights.

You get rights at one years service (apart from certain exceptions)

To be fair, at 16, I was fucking grateful to have a job, get on with it, I'm at the bottom of a huge fucking ladder, I wouldn't post shit and expect admiration for my subversivness....

I did say she would be on probation etc, I was wondering in a more general sense....

If she's been there a year, she'd go through the disciplinary procedure.

Chances are, and I'm generalising here... she hated her fucking job, therefore couldn't be arsed and didn't really perform, she had fuck all rights, they got rid of her.

That's the deal, that's how it works. It's not a secret, I knew this at that age.

I think she was daft and I'm not surprised they sacked her. I don't think it raises any issues of online privacy - only issues of individual responsibility.

If you say something online you shouldn't be surprised if people see it.

Sacking her seems harsh but I've worked for people that would've sacked me for something like this.

Do you think a year is unreasonable?

Kind of. Means a company can do a lot of naughty stuff to employees in their first year. I wouldn't suggest that no time limits should exists, but perhaps some rights should get introduced after a month or two, some more at 6 months.

But I know sod all about employment law...

BTW, you seem very vociferous about all of this - any reason?

Depends for which rights. I think after you've done 3 months you they shouldn't be able to sack you without good reason.

Disagree.

You either want to work for someone or you don't. I think after a year you know for a fact. 6 months? squiffy... anyone can just be a cunt and get sacked or force more employment due to rights etc etc...

This is why a lot of Public Sector jobs have a years probation period...

I've been on both ends of this.

I was a twat when I was younger. But I soon realised it was me actually being a twat.

Thing is, here, on Urban, and other places, they say the employer is a cunt by default... I find that stupid and narrow vision.

chances are she's 16 and was a bit bored (as we all are at work from time to time) and perhaps was showing off a bit (some 16 y/os would think it was "grown up" to be moaning about work - compared to friends of a similar age who are still at school seeing it on FB...)
