101 Reasons why John Peel was a God

70) On Top of the Pops once he introduced Big Country by saying 'now here's the band who put the tree back into country'

71) Inviting Jeff Mills to do a live mix session and offering listeners the chance to come to the studio and watch him in action. Afterwards, Peel was well excited and said something along the lines of 'So that's what a DJ's supposed to do ... '

72) blagging his first job in american radio simply by dint of being from liverpool, and thus clearly and obviously knowing the beatles!

73) his music library. just imagine it.

74) the fall - theme from sparta fc. first heard it on his show, rarely leaves my record player for more than a day or two,

you only managed 74 reasons guys. tut tut.
So heres my contribution.
75. he played my brother's records and mentioned yeovil, (where we lived at the time) which was just about the most exciting thing that had ever happened in my life (up to that point).
76. The Adam and the ants early sessions (nothing at all like the shit they put out later on)
77. Early Fall sessions ( I was like WTF?) never heard anything like that before.:eek:
78. Henry Badowski
79. the badass electronic music
80. The damned in session doing a piss take of gary numans 'cars'. something about it being a gay bar. (way ahead of their time)
81. His upside down head look (always a winner)

apologies for any repeats. I don't have time to read through threads.

Three quick points; firstly 101 is far too low a number, secondly his Godlyness wasn't measurable in simple numbers, and finally he wasn't simply "a God", but THE God. :)

Oh, and just to add to it;

82) He gave two of his children the middle name of Anfield, and when they complained he pointed out that if he had supported Shresbury Town, they'd have been Gay Meadow. :)

83) two Aphex Twin sessions
84) on TOTP - "You know, Aretha Franklin can make any old rubbish sound good, and I think she just has."
85) marrying a 15 year old.

91) After playing 'Higher State Of Consciousness' by Josh Wink for the second time - "I'm sure I'm not alone in thinking that sounded better when I played it the other night, at the wrong speed." :D :D :D

92) Not being too cool for school and regularly doing voiceover work for things like Aquafresh Ads, A life of grime, and of course...Cyderdelic! :)

93) playing everything but everything. The peelenium was classic when he was playing His Masters Voice stuff from the twenties and then you'd get stuff like ATR, Napalm Death, Hip Hop...etc etc.

94) When he was doing shows from Peelacres, he'd stop mid-show when his daughter (Flossie?) would come in and say something about homework or something. It had something that nothing else will ever have.

There's plenty of classic Peel quotes here

96? first time he played the Mary Chain's 'Sidewalking' he said at the top of the show that he had their new single but hadn't listened to it yet, played it about half hour into the show. As it faded out he said something along the lines of ' ohh is that twangy guitar custom made for your uncle John or what?' skips the needle back plays the solo again says he thinks it's great and admits he still can't wait til the end of the show so he can play it again.
5 or 10 mins later he says ' sometimes a man's gotta do...' and plays it again.

So many. One of my favourites was after playing (White Man) In Hammersmith Palais in late 70's, "turning rebellion into money, that was The Clash".

97) Wanting to create a band on his Dandelion label called 101 Sharons, which simply consisted of 101 women all called Sharon. :)

theres some classics in there.
i liked this one from him introducing totp.
"At number 10, it's the multi-talented Tina Turner."
"At number 9, it's the multi-talented Prince."
"At number 8, it's the multi-talented Frankie Goes To Hollywood"
and so on and so forth until he got to:
"and at number 2, it's the...er...it's Nik Kershaw." :D

and this one;
In 1993 Peel took over the lunchtime slot for a week after then-controller Johnny Beerling was challenged by someone at a conference. He'd obviously been told "Look man, we don't want to compromise your show, but remember there will be a different audience listening, and we do have a daytime playlist to follow... just bear that in mind, OK?" First record - "Why Are People Grudgeful?" by The Fall, followed with the obscure reggae original version of the same song. He then continued in the same vein, playing a lot of hard-trance, the odd Beefheart classic and making snide comments about most of the playlist. For instance, the Chris Issak which included the line '...and you can't do a thing to stop me' to which Peel retorted, "Yes I can, mate, I can take your awful CD out of the machine and throw it as far away from this studio as possible." For a brief moment, we thought we'd won. Next week, he was back on the night-shift. Bet off.
