John Peel was another well connected rich man who like many of his ilk got a top job with the BBC and built a career out of it.

Breaking news: the media is a middle class institution.

John Peel was completely open about the reason he lasted as long as he did was because of the old school tie that comes with private education. He never pretended otherwise and, no doubt, if pressed on the matter would admit its unfairness.

47) (memory triggered by the cerial thread in suburban) comparing those kelloggs raisin wheat things that look like mini swedded wheat to brillo pads with fruit in, in his Radio Time collumn.
48) The cuban boys - Flosses Alarming Clock & the Vinyl Countdown (sampled Richard Whitley & the countdown theme IIRC)
49)radio advert for Frosties that I swear was him for a competion to pretend to be a tiger -

there's nits in my wiskers and my furs going grey...but I've stil got it look grrr

(minus point - doing the radio advert for how wonderful The Smith compilation that got instantly disowned by band members was)

50) Inspiring this bizarre performance :D

51) The use of the phrase "that was what we doctors call...."
52) Only 'famous person dies' moment ever to make me cry. I still feel bereaved :(

eta re Billybob/52
just remembered:
some bastard on another board posted a spoof "John Peel is dead" thread led to me seeinging the thread title, wandering into the lounge, interupting my gran's tv viewing to look at ceefax, and wandering back out in bemusment - then actually reading the thread, seing the atmitance several posts down that it was a different John Peel, and instantly reacting/posting "You cunt!".

I've possibley mentioned this on the Peel aniversary thread - can't rember if I did it here or just elsewhere at the time, but I was numb for a while after he died - didn't really sink in until some days after - thinking about the glorious White Stripes live concert - was it Madia vale or Peel Acres? - just before they broke and remembered buying a bulk pack of tapes ready for the reapeat, turning on the radio the night of Tuesday September 11th 2001 just needing for him to be there but he wasn't and it just totally hit me that he was never going to be there again. :(

never did find that tape of the white stripes or the one of Half man half biscuit:mad:

So many said you had to kiss his arse to get on.

I happen to know that he liked Top Cat and thought that the beeb were silly to change the title just 'cos there was a product called that.

54) think it was Peace News that reported he'd supported them or their causes until pressure from BBC got too strong - & he went on the first anti-Iraq war march according to the NME (did they have a photo:confused: )

A posthumous Nobel peace prize awaits.

55) Sonic Youth doing a session of four Fall covers (inlcuding a cover of a cover in 'Victoria'), and getting the lyrics to 'My New House' completely wrong.

When I was 19 my fave band was called 'The Only Ones'.

Before he pegged out, he made them do a studio sesh that made them sound even more incredible than they were.

I lost the fucking vinyl. It was light blue.

I bought it on cassette when it came out, in fact I've just put it on now. :)

57) Young Marble Giants doing "Brand New Life" on a peel Session and managing to sound even bleaker and more beautiful than on vinyl.

59) Being a lovely bloke when I got very overexcited when I met him at Glastonbury and could barely speak cos I was so excited :o :)

60) The festive 50

No, it's 21:) (that is at the point of Paolo999's quoted post)

So where are we up to now then, clever clogs? A pint says you can't dedupe it at this late stage. My guess, 72. :)

63. Got me into music I'd never have heard otherwise
64. Got me into music that was (very often ;) :o ) a lot better than I was ever into before.

I was a faithful nighttime listener, most times a week, for several years in the late 70s/early 80s. In retrospect, I'm regretting never listening to the radio much after about 1985 :(

TopCat, you're being an arse -- see Divisive Cotton's response to your post. Peel was pretty frank about the matter (his public school background and how it helped him) in the autobiography (finished off by Sheila) as well.

63) In the mid 80's, The John Peel Show was the only place that a teenage boy from the middle of nowhere in Wales could listen to Hip Hop, in between the Death Metal and other crap.

64) In the mid 80's, The John Peel Show was the only place that a teenage boy from the middle of nowhere in Wales could listen to House Music, in between the Death Metal and other crap.

67)the mysterious recording that turned up on one of the tribute shows the week or so after his death of him and Tony Blackburn siging You Don't Bring Me Flowers to each other  Peel was doing the part of mock outraged wife iirc

eta I had a cdr with some of those shows on but I lost it:(
