101 Reasons why John Peel was a God

He had lots of records and liked The Fall and the Captain with the physique of Buddha so I suspect he was.

26. arranging a DHR showcase with atari teenage riot headlining at the royal festival hall. no security, just a few OAPs with torches, no barriers to keep the audience seperate from the band. no remorse!
:D

Class, didn't know that

27. DJing to the ravin' masses at Fabric and playing whatever he damn well liked! (was too munted to remember what he played though... :S)

i only remember 'love will tear us apart'

John Peel was another well connected rich man who like many of his ilk got a top job with the BBC and built a career out of it.

So many said you had to kiss his arse to get on.

Maybe so, but his show introduced me to a lot of music. Nobody else was doing it.

Thats the flip side, I have loads of stuff that he put out on his sessions stuff. His championing of Napalm death made me very happy. :)

...playing a wider variety of music than is ever likely to be aired again on Radio 1 (or Radio 6, from what I've heard).

*shrug* Arse-kissing and showbiz go together like KFC and vomit.

Thankfully less so now as there are so many independant ways to distribute and publicise music these days.

PS I like KFC and have never puked it up. :p

Who....give me Dr Fox anyday? ;)

Too be honest I don't get the Peel thing, seems cool to deify him as I see it :)

It may be that you are too young to remember his Radio 1 show.

Or maybe you just have terrible taste in music.:)

True words.

He was totally pissed with Mark Bolan because he expected free ligging rights when he became famous.

He was a DJ ffs and a moaning cunt. :D

According to who? I've heard a few accounts of the way Bolan treated his band, and he sounds like a total wanker.

29 - When he did his one and only daytime cover for an absent collegue, introducing "i'm every woman" by Whitney Houston with words to the effect of "I'm every pear shape middle aged man, but I don't make a racket like this about it, Here's Whitney houston*"

*paraphrased cos it was about 20 years ago and even though I was nine or tenish I could still tell it was funny.

30 - Describing Sigur Ros simply as 'Wierdos' when their first session track ended.

31 - Playing a radiohead record and saying 'D'ya know, I always thought that boy could have had a great career as a country and western singer'

32 - Not being Zane Lowe, Steve Lurpack etc and refusing to fawn over anyone, except the people he actually liked, rather than the ones that looked good for radio 1's profile.

I read a really good piece by Stewart Lee about how Peel's death marked the end of music show's that were just about the music on R1 and how everything else when you listen, you can hear the demographic it's aimed for in every aspect of the show which I think is sadly true.

Too true. 6 music is pathetic for most of the time. Indie schmindie retro crap half the time. Nemone, Liz Kershaw and Steve Lurpack are some of their most important DJ's so that says it all.

The odd half decent thing is on there but the chance of hearing anything remotely unusual in the daytime are just about zero. Chances of hearing "Here comes the new one/a classic from the Charlatans" - very high...

31) the smiths
32) sonic youth
33) half man half biscuit

I later met the guys from the band who turned out were friends of
a friend and they were not to pleased that I'd said they reminded me
of Brian Cant from playschool.

38) Never talking over the top of records.
39) Hearing Helen Love on his show.
40) Feeling part of life at Peel Acres.

42) He mimed very badly on TOTP :D
