10 year old kids with karate brown belts

this thread has brought back memories of holding "horse stance" for 15 minutes and the burning pain that that induced in my thighs

I also had a six pack (as opposed to a party 7) and some lovely calluses.

wish I had never stopped now

what's the horse stance good for?
apart from developing the ability of standing and shitting at the same time?

i will never, ever take my child to learn a japanese martial art.
too formal and pointless, unless of course, you're into discipline and having no fun.

thus my amusement about the kids asking if I was a black belt (presumably in karate).

They were being polite, seeing you in the room for the advanced class it is a natural assumption you might be a graded belt. The question could also be asked as, He can't be black belt, the other boy sez ' Ask him', i.e., standards are slipping.

The essence of learning the marial arts is to understand the mental attitude and to be non-violent towards other people. The qualifications gives you the self confidence to deal with situations as they arise.

Tai Chi Qigong Shibashi Instructor Training Course

Tai Chi Qigong Shibashi is one of the most popular qigong around the world because it is effective and easy to learn. The demand for tai chi qigong instructors is increasing as baby boomers start to age and as more people become aware of the benefits of qigong. We always receive emails from interested students asking us whether we know of any good tai chi or qigong instructors teaching in their cities.

In this course, students will learn:

The theory of qi and how practicing qigong can improve one's health
The details surrounding and reasoning behind each movement which will yield answers to questions such as “Why stances should be shoulder width apart? What happens if you use a wider or narrower stance?”
Individual form correction
Abdominal breathing vs. reverse breathing
About the feelings to be expected after practicing qigong and the meaning behind each feeling
About the common mistakes students make when practicing Shibashi
How to test if the student is both physically and mentally relax
How to add extra requirements to maximize the health benefits obtained from practicing Shibashi
How to incorporate some simple yet powerful stances (zhuang) into Shibashi
How to increase your sensitivity to qi
How to modify the form when teaching seniors and those with special needs
How to create a qi field to magnify the benefits of group practice
How to detect and defend themselves from sick qi
Even though the theme of this instructor training course is around Shibashi, the knowledge you will learn in this course can be applied to many different styles of qigong. Furthermore, this course covers all the 3 major types of qigong, namely moving qigong, standing qigong and sitting qigong. For moving qigong, we have Shibashi; for standing qigong, we have Wuji and Taji Stance and for the sitting qigong, we have the basic Internal Alchemy technique.

A certificate will be issued to those who successfully complete this course. Their names and contact information could be listed on this website. On average our site has 500 unique visitors per day, and we have a very high traffic ranking among all other websites related to tai chi and qigong.

Some (traditional) martial arts reward belts to stop students leaving. In BJJ you have to be 19 to get a black belt and you stay at each grade (including white) for about 2 years. I've seen a video of a 6 year old second dan which was hilarious.

Kids have separate classes from adults and have junior grading systems, it's up to a grader usually to decide whether they keep it when they move to 'adult' age.

The 'advanced' class may have just been kata...or a children's class. (or grown to have become a children's class, it happens)

A 10 year old brown belt is unusual though. I've known some judo world medallists and none of them were higher than orange at that age.
