1 in 100 American adults is in jail

I read more than a few times that about half the american prison population are there for cannabis offences.

But either way, this information about their huge prison numbers is yet another pointer to the kind of society this nation is. And as aldebaran noted, the biggest of their criminals never actually make up any of the numbers because they're busy running the country: cheating, lying, stealing, and killing.

I heard some cop on the radio from one of those Cops for Legalization organizations. He said that in the US over the last thirty years, more and more people have been incarcerated, more and more money is spent on the war on drugs, yet today, more people are using drugs than ever before, and drugs are more widely available and cheaper than ever before.

It's not working.

Depends what part of China and who you happen to be I guess Jessie.

Sure.

But (as you are no doubt aware,) I do get a little peeved when peeps (such as Squatticus,) make these sweeping generalisations and tar the country with their sneering insinuations.

I'd be interested to hear from anyone on here who actually knows someone who has, or has had, problems in China.

It's not the wealthiest nor the most "free" of countries and there are humungous problems that need to be addressed and tackled - but it really doesn't deserve the reputation that many seem to carry in their minds. China bashing is still prevalent, but times have moved on somewhat since the cultural revolution.

So there!

:)

Woof

It amazes me that this guy is taken seriously by anyone.

I agree.
Unfortunately when Murray and Hernnstein's "The Bell Curve" was published, the publishers didn't do a bang-up job of checking the sources of some of the data used to make the central claim about Caucasian vs "Negroid" intelligence, didn't establish whether the methods used to establish the base IQs were culturally neutral, etc etc, so a pair of charlatans, some of whose data was derived from racist-owned (many by Willis Carto, no less) pseudo-academic journals, were able to get wide coverage for that particular piece of shit.
What amazes me is that the US right didn't discard Murray like the rotten-smelling piece of refuse he is. As it is, he still gets work from the rightist think-tanks, and op-ed pieces in the daily press. Perhaps he's the "acceptable" face of racism in the US?
