0815 Get made redundant

Budget: makes notes to do it when sober. Ta Badgers

Yep...

I am sure that there will be do-gooders all over the web telling you that drink is not the answer when you receive bad news. However I would give myself the first day to have a bloody good beer and moan about the world and stuff.

Then get organised and energised when the hangover fades :)

Gabi - don't say that! My agency lady was all super-positive and smiley. Are you saying she was faking it?! :D

Yes. My agents are trying to put a brave face on it as well, but the facts speak for themselves. There's no work out there in my industry anyway. I do design btw, which is a bit of a bellwether for the job market (usually the first to get cut as it's seen as a bit of an extravagance).

Oh shit. Boo to the shoe people. What a shame.

The way things are now, the fact that you're got public sector expertise should stand you in good stead. Also, the old cobblers should gove you a glowing ref, no?

Best advice I think!

They should do, yeah. Gave me a £365 handbag out of guilt too!

Agy was pos on the public sector stuff - stuff I quit to take this one but hey ho, that's the way the biscuit is smashed to smithereens innit.

So, my pretend job had a proper redundancy ;)

Not yet! It's the only nice thing I own but I'll keep it in it's dustbag jst in case :D

You should eke out that guilt thing a bit more and ask them if they can keep inviting you to sample sales and the like (if they have them).

So consensus is to sign on, then fuck off apointment if I get back on my feet?

I remember hearing some bloke on the radio a few months ago whose schtick was essentially "Recessions are good for business". Yeah, I know...

Thing is, he did make a couple of good points. First was that recessions weed out the weak ones, which means that what's left is stronger, and much more likely to survive in the longer term.

The second point he made was that, even if the job market contracts by 10%, there's still 90% of the original set of jobs still available. Yes, it means you're competing with more people, but if you're good, there ARE still jobs to get.

It sounds a bit Pollyanna, but I think there's some truth in there, too. I guess you may need to cast your net wider, perhaps look to work in sectors outside your core area, but...well, this is basically saying, in a few paragraphs, that your agency lady's optimism might not be completely fake. Don't give up hope - anyone looking for staff in this climate is going to be looking for fired-up, capable and motivated people who look like they'd be useful to keep the operation going in more competitive times.

Good luck.

I'm totally institutionalised - feel like a lost soul while out on the streets during work hours :(
Nearly cried for first time when bus stopped for 2 mins silence :( fuck

Just keep yaself busy if ya can.. it can be quite enjoyable being out of work for a little spell. I've taken up walking, playing tennis, kite flying. These are all free things :) You do definitely notice an entirely different group of people wandering around during the day (here in brixton anyway) who must melt away when the working hordes return at 6.00.

I've got to get something soon though. The market in my job sector does seem quite amazingly deathly still unless I was willing to go permanent. I would but I'm all booked to go away in Jan for a few months.

Anyway stella. chin up, enjoy the beautiful autumn daze... keep one eye on the mobile, somethin will come up.

I would feel like this for a bit.
Never really ever had time off since I left education.
Would try to be as industrious as I could just to keep me distracted.

Not much else to add though...
