A couple of weeks ago I looked into the idea of going to Cornwall to hit the beach for a bit. By train it is ridiculously expensive and a pain in the arse journey involving transfers and something like a twelve hour journey not arriving until the next day. Or you can fly from Manchester for a fraction of the price and a fraction of the time.
For a government that's allegedly supposed to be encouraging rail travel and other environmentally-more-friendly travel, it's doing a piss poor job of cracking down on the rail operators and making them provide affordable fares. But then the whole affordable fares, increased use of public transport thing conflicts with overcrowding and rail companies wanting to make obscene profits.
