A purely hypothetical question was asked of me recently, whar car would you get if you had 20K.
To a point it has to be practical; my job involves lots of short trips in town, 2 doors would be fine...I have been mulling over this question for days and I can't find an answer.
Possibly the nearest I could get would be something like a Mazda MX5 a year or two old but nothing on the road today, relatively new really does it for me.
If you didn't know, my current drive is an Alfa Romeo Brera, which is not really suited to my job, but hey, she is a stunner.

Is there a modernish car that does it for you, what can you recommend?

I might spend £5k on a used car, £5k on photographic equipment - and then use some of the rest of the £10k on a grand European tour :)

I'd get a short or medium wheel base high top camper van- petrol or preferably hybrid or trybrid.

I'd get a Nissan Leaf. It would save me about £2,000 a year in petrol, tax and maintenance, and would last me 10+ years.

So you're considering an MX5 but a Brera is not suited to your job. In what way is an MX5 more practical than a Brera?

Sounds like you haven't thought this through.

And 20k on anything that's not German is a waste of money.

I'd buy a £2k bike and go on a world trip with the rest.

Anyone who spends 2k on a bike without an engine is a massive bellend.

Not as much as someone spending a year's salary on a stupid noisy polluting dangerous car. :p

I'd get a Morris Traveller and convert it to electric drive. If i could drive, which I can't. And if i wanted a car, which I don't.

Sorry. I know that's not very helpful but £20,000 sounds an incredible amount to spend on a car.

That's only a month's salary for Hash Tag.

    Idaho blah blah blah

Over priced, over valued, and no where near as reliable as they once were.

I'd only get Japanese cars. And for 20k, definitely a camper. Anyone who spends more than 10k on a normal car is a bellend.

surely these days it would be 'if you had £400 a month to lease a car, what would you get'

which is roughly £5k down payment and £400 a month for 36 months from the £20k

Anyway, the answer to the question in the OP is a 2015 or 2016 model BMW 535i.

    Easy really.

The correct answer of course is to save a bit harder and buy a decent motor.

Most modern cars below say £30,000 are as boring as anything, lacking in character and there is very little to choose between them.

The MX5 is no more suitable to my job than my Brera. The Brera is beautiful, the mX5 is, a cheap fun sports car with little else to say for it.
I don't have 20K it was just one of those questions because modern cars are really not pushing any buttons. They are devoid of charm, character and personalty.

If you're after a fun sports car and don't care about practical just get a 10 year old SL55 AMG.

That'll use your Brera's engine just to run the aircon.
