£12000 to anyone killed in the troubles

well if the uk goverment is going to hand out cheques they can hand them out to the relatives of squaddies as well.
or none at all.
a million quid and a tonne of coke wouldn't stop most of the people in the north who want troubles 11 (although the drugs might kill them off:))

spent time on politics.ie full of wankers who think PIRA were the best thing since sliced bread and wankers who think the UVF were fighting to defend
prots:facepalm: agaisnt the catholic hordes:(

So the family of somebody killed by an IRA terrorist deserves £12,000 of British taxpayer money? I can see it on the grounds of pragmatism (as you suggest above), but not the grounds of principle.
?

The British Army are applying this "principle" everyday in Afganistan..When Afgans are killed or property destroyed there
is usually a payment made to either the relatives of the dead or the relevent property owner...and in Afganistan the Army
is an extension of the British state.
Not much difference between one and the other.

imo.. the worst compo game is being orchestrated by the screws.... looking a heap of money for 'retirement bonuses'... a lot of these scum were involved in the atrocities in the cages in the late 70s and 80s....

I agree..but like the RUC reserve and the UDR reserve..the gov has decieded that the only
way to help with the implimentation of a new prison system is to pay these fuckers off and
be done with them..There relics of the past and a major blockage in the introduction of much
needed reforms.
Dont worry much of them will drink themselves to death with their "golden goodbyes" bemoaning "the good old days" when
they could assault, batter and intimidate at their liesure....much like the South African security people..there days of
lording it over people are coming to and end...

What about the UDA/UFF who the British State was happy to prop up and defend until their activities became too embarassing and were proscribed in 1992. For that matter who set up th UVF and crushed the civil rights movement in the 60's early 70's backed ethnic cleansing and created environment for recent cycle of violence.

what about it was pointing out their a plenty of people on both sides who would be keen on troubles 2
or would certainly put a spanner into plans of having normal politics.
The british State had a policy of ignoring Ulster till it all kicked off the first british army units sent to belfast had to stop and buy maps  It was referred to as "sleepy hollow" till it all went wrong.
If Westminister had given a Damm about the place civil rights would never have been an issue.

I'm poor as fuck and living on the dole and yet I can still acknowledge that my relative prosperity compared to the rest of the world is based on the empire. I won't feel guilty for it, no kabbes. But neither will I turn my nose up skeptically when it might be suggested that the state built on blood by our forefathers might give a little back.

So again it's the working class shelling out for the indulgences of the ruling class. Although I'd rather the money go to victims of Empire oppression than shoring up financial institutions.

The squaddies had already accepted the king's shilling. Apart from conscripts way back when.
